Hello all

we are a Quebec family that are looking into welcoming a young student (15yo) from Italy for the summer - not babysitting as i am off for the summer but mostly to offer her an experience abroad and to expose our children to another culture/language.

i am lost into if she would require a visa as she is minor and she will not be paid to come here, i may offer her the plane fare as a gift but that is about it.

any advice? Only information i find is on adult au pair.

thanks!

Are you sure there will be absolutely no babysitting involved? Do you know this person? Why would you pay for their plane ticket if they were coming to go on vacation in Canada?

we are stuck in a province where English as a second language is not promoted - we aim by having a student in house for a few weeks to expose our kids to english and improve their efficiency.

i am not working in the summer so i do not need babysitting. And by paying her plane ticket is only a nice way to get her a little something for her to come, we have the means to do that so why not? She wanted to use her pocket money, i would rather she keeps it to use it here for activities.

If she is in Canada to provide English language environment for your children that would be working.

If she has an Italian passport, she just needs an eTA.

IMO, her intent to travel to Canada is fine.

If she is not going to be involved in childcare at all, it is not working.

However, when she arrives in Canada, what is she going to say to CBSA? Who is this person to you? Is this some sort of a hosting/exchange situation through an organization, a family friend, a random answer to an ad you placed?

Also don’t get how an Italian would be able to provide a more English environment than someone bilingual in Quebec or a student from another region in Quebec or Canada. This just doesn’t make sense. Nobody pays for a plane ticket for a random Italian teenager to come live with them.

Be a lot cheaper just to bring a teenager from lets say Nova Scotia if you want someone to speak English . It’s pretty close to Quebec, they could take the train from Halifax

How do you know this person? Are they your relative? As mentioned an Italian passport holder just needs an ETA.

But in all honesty your purpose doesn't make any sense, if you want someone to improve English proficiency you picked Italy out of all the countries in the world? I have been to Rome and I wouldn't say English is widely spoken there then lets say Uk, USA, Australia, India...etc....not to mention you live in CANADA! There are millions of English speakers locally that could help that's much cheaper than someone from Italy, also the locals wouldn't require a visa.

There has to be more you are not mentioning.
