Yes I got that on the recording too but, this week I got a ghost update follow by DM on sponsor side the next day (no e-mails yet). Hard to believe the call centre at times :-/

I just got a note this week that my sponsor was approved (actually he got the email)
Mine says "We are reviewing your eligibility." (I'm the Principal Applicant.)
1) What does that mean exactly? I clicked the question mark and it says it means they are reviewing my entire app to make sure I am eligible for the program we applied for. Since we applied under "common law sponsorship" I assume that means they will look and make sure we are truly common law before they proceed. Any thoughts?
2) Also, they will probably do that before they begin my BGC, do you think?
3) Lastly, those of you who are from the Montreal hub...we have now received the message "We will let you know when we begin your BGC." What is your prediction? BGC might start within the next month or so?
Thank you ALL for your time.

I assume when they say they are reviewing my eligibility as the principal applicants means they are looking at the info we sent in to prove we are, in fact, common law.

Hi everyone,

I applied separately for OWP later in Jan. I was able to link the OWP application to my cic, and it says it was received on Jan 14th. From the looks of it, no processing has been started on it yet. Is this normal? It's been almost 3 months now...
My current work permit expires on May 19th. Should I try to call cic and ask what's up? If so, what combination of numbers do you suggest I use?

Will I (the Principal Applicant) receive an email that I am eligible for the common-law family sponsorship just as my sponsor did? or no?
Thank you all for your time.

You can also ask for the help of the local MP's (Member of Parliament) office where you live in Canada. We have used their services MANY times through this process. Often, they can check for you through their system.

Will I (the Principal Applicant) receive an email that I am eligible for the common-law family sponsorship just as my sponsor did? or no?
Thank you all for your time.
Yes, you are expecting 3 different emails for yourself.
  • 1st one is what people call Approved in Principle (AIP) letter confirming your eligibility to apply for a PR under the SCLPC class.
  • 2nd one is called Decision Made (DM) letter confirming the successful completion of your application and informing you to wait for your local immigration office to contact you for the finalization of your PR.
  • 3rd one is a Landing Interview Invitation letter (email) from your local office with the date and time, and the address of the place where your interview is going to be held, although I've seen a few applicants received their Landing Interview Invitation without getting their AIP and DM letters (either or both).
The one your sponsor received is called Sponsor Approval (SA) letter. Some people get it before the PA's AIP and DM letters, some after, and some never.

Once you receive your AIP, you can apply for an OWP online if you haven't done it already and you can also apply for your provincial health/medical insurance coverage and can get reimbursed for any medical expenses (i.e walk-in clinic fees, ER visits, childbirths, etc...) that you paid at non-resident rate.

Most people would get these letters through emails but some will see them uploaded to their MyCIC/GCKey accounts, so keep your eyes peeled.

That’s normal I got that too
Wow! This was a HUGE help! Thank you so much, @barsarah
In gckey, it said that my profile was updated but nothing changed
I am an applicant from the September Inland group. I got the same "ghost" update and received a bunch of other updates in a row within a period of 2 weeks. It means someone opened up your application and reviewing it.

Some people got everything on the same day of getting a "ghost" update, so keep your eyes peeled from now until you get your AIP and DM letters.

So if it was in a CIC's perfect little logical world, the process should be in the following order:
  1. Sponsor gets a DM on eCAS with an extra line added in the details section informing about a correspondence letter sent to the sponsor.
  2. Sponsor gets a SA email.
  3. PA gets a "ghost" update.
  4. PA's side on eCAS gets an extra line added in the details section showing the date they started processing the PA's application.
  5. PA's review of eligibility status on GCKey changes to we are reviewing the PA's eligibility.
  6. CIC/IRCC may request and review additional documents if necessary.
  7. PA's review of eligibility status on GCKey changes to eligibility has been reviewed.
  8. PA gets an AIP email.
  9. CIC/IRCC may commence and complete a security and criminality background checks.
  10. PA's side on eCAS gets a DM.
  11. PA's background check status on GCKey changes to background check was completed.
  12. PA gets a DM email.
  13. PA gets a Landing Interview Invitation email.
  14. PA's final decision status on GCKey changes to application was approved.
Also the PA's MyCIC/GCKey account should have the AIP, DM and Landing Interview Invitation letters electronically uploaded so the PA can download them at a later date if the PA can't access his or her email and/or accidentally deletes them. So please keep extra copies of your emails just in case.

Also out of the 52 registered applicants in our September group, 6 of them are from Quebec and almost all of their applications seem to be going at an incredibly slower pace, compared to the applicants from other areas.
