Canadian with American visa wanting to move back to Canada with American boyfriend

I moved from Ontario to live in Michigan for 7 years now and my visa (permanent resident green card) is going to expire in a few years. I have a boyfriend of now a year and a half and would like to eventually marry him and both be living in Canada, likely Ontario where my family is. First, how do I move/live in Canada as a citizen again, and second, how do I bring my boyfriend with me legally so we can both work?

There's nothing special you need to do as a citizen. You can simply cross the border and live in Canada again.

Your boyfriend, on the other hand, needs authorization to live in Canada. Fastest would be for you to sponsor him for permanent residency. In order to do this, you either need to be married or common law. Common law means you have lived together continuously for at least a year.

Thank you! We have both been living together as of last month for a year. However he never updated his license and still is legally living at his parents address. What type of things would I need to prove we have lived together? We likely will update it soon and be here another year yet so by the time we take action it should be fine but otherwise ... just curious if we need mail or something

You'll need to show proof that he has resided at the same address as you for a full year. He should update his license to show your joint address. If you are renting, put his name on the lease. Get a joint bank account / credit card. Joint utilities. He should change his address with his employer to your joint address as well.
