I am an international student studying in Canada. I got a accepted for an internship starting in the Winter semester. I apologize in advance for the long post.

However, I do not have a Work permit. My employer agreed to let me work up to 20 hours a week until I get it.

My questions are as follows:

- I was told that I can get it in a day at the border, is this true or is it just a rumor? Does this apply to a co-op permit?

- In the case that it is, is it possible to apply for one online and if it is not ready by the time I come back to Canada (9th January) Is it possible to do the border process? (Just as a backup)

- If I get a work permit, will it nulify my study permit? I am only in third year still have to finish the 4th.

Thank you very much for the help.

NOTE: I am not from a visa-exempt country, however I do have a valid study permit, job offer, coop letter and proof of enrollment.

This internship is not considered a co-op that counts as a requirement for my university. Am I still eligible for a co-op permit? Or do I apply for an open permit please advise me.

You claim a co-op not to be a requirement for your college yet you state you have a co-op letter ?? , how is that possible.

Only if your college has an option for students to go for a co-op will you be able to get a co-op work permit. This is rarely mandatory and this usually required a certain GPA to be eligible.

If your course has no option for a co-op then you cannot apply for a co-op work permit. You will have to apply for a work permit which will take time and you will need a LMIA and will nullify your study permit.

My program does have a co-op component. But it is optional.

My univeristy has an optional co-op program. I satisfy the GPA requirement and have a co-op letter.

Would I be able to get it at the Border?

They are no longer processing permits at the border is what I have heard. Many people are getting denied. Why take the risk, your internship employer is willing to let you work 20hrs a week so take them up on the offer and apply for the co-op work permit normally.

True. And it has no effect on my study permit correct?

No. This is in addition, if co-op is mandatory you get a letter with your offer letter and you will get it along with your study permit. Since it's not mandatory in your case you have to do these extra steps.
