Hi there,

I am a 40 year old Canadian Citizen living in Canada for 7 years now (came as PR and became a citizen). I sponsored my common law partner for PR in 2013 and he became PR and is just becoming a citizen within a week. Due to our differences however, we have gone separate paths and my ex-partner moved out of the house 2 months back and we have severed our ties. I am yet to report us as separated for good (as I read somewhere, you have to be apart for three months plus before the relationship is considered as over).

I am back to alone in Canada status now. I am wondering if I could sponsor my real sister (44 years old) now and her dependent child (16 years) as I have no family in Canada anymore. I have no kids and soon enough on status have no partner either.

Due to her age, she is not able to qualify on her own. She is divorced and has a dependent son. I am really hoping I could sponsor her and get her here as family. Please let me know if I could do it. Thanks a ton in advance.

Do you have ANY living parents or grandparents anywhere in the world? If you do, you can't sponsor your sister.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I have both my parents alive living in India, but I heard that if you do not have any relatives in Canada, you could sponsor your sibling...is that wrong?

On the contrary, does that mean, I can sponsor my parents? Could you please point me to how can I sponsor them?

Since your parents are alive, you cannot sponsor your sister. If she wishes to qualify, she will have to qualify on her own.

You can qualify to sponsor your parents if you meet the minimum income requirements for the last three years. Only a certain number of applications are accepted each year and the process will re-open again sometime in January (details aren't posted yet).

It's a common mistake in the interpretation of the following link. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...ship/other-relatives/who-you-can-sponsor.html

Option 2: other relative
You may sponsor one relative, related by blood or adoption, of any age if you meet all of the conditions, including:

  • you don't have a living relative you could sponsor instead, such as a:
    • spouse
    • common-law partner
    • conjugal partner
    • son or daughter
    • parent
    • grandparent
    • brother or sister
    • uncle or aunt
    • nephew or niece
  • you don’t have any of the above-named relatives who is:
    • a Canadian citizen
    • a permanent resident
    • registered Indian under the Indian Act
This means that BOTH stanzas are required, not just one OR the other.
