I sponsored my wife 4 months ago. Did not hear anything until I received the whole application package back in the mail Yesterday. There was a letter inside saying that the application was rejected because sponsor must provide a proof of Canadian status. I sent my valid Canadian passport photocopies and Citizen card photocopies with the original application and it is still attached with the application when I got it back yesterday. On the checklist they ask for only 1 of the following: Passport photocopies, Citizen card or birth certificate which I check marked Passport and Citizen card as i sent those. I do not understand why it was rejected then. Can anyone explain please and what should I do now ?

It might’ve been a mistake, but the checklist specifically says to submit just *one* of those documents as proof of status in Canada, not all of them

I understand that but it doesnt mean I did not provide a proof as that was the reason application was rejected. What are my options now and can I send the same documents as they are about 5-6 months old?

It wasn’t rejected it was returned. You have to resubmit the application with updated forms and you can use the same receipt

The app would not be returned for sending both passport and citizen card copies, no chance of that. Since they said sponsor must prove status and both of those do prove it, the only thing it could be is an oversight and that the agent somehow missed them both. Which is really unlucky.

Should I attach a letter explaining the situation when I re-send the new application ? Maybe they will process it Faster.

Unfortunately there's no point. Returned applications are treated as a brand new application once received and processing times will start from scratch.

HI, in my case my application was retuned twice.
the first time they requested for some additional doc including PCC from my home country, and the second time was just an oversight.
My first submission was in March ending got retuned in May ( requesting additional doc ), sent back in May, retuned back in July ( oversight ) i updated my forms and sent it back with a letter. now they are processing background check on my application ( almost done ). this is just to encourage you. update you forms and send it back with a detail letter .

My application was returned the first time because it was "missing" my marriage certificate. Turns out they just wanted a different type of certificate. I couldn't understand what the issue was, but we called immigration to have them clarify. I would suggest that, and explain what you included, and try to get some input from them before you resubmit. I would hate for you to just return everything just to have them send it back because there actually IS some kind of issue. Also, if any forms have been updated since you first submitted, make sure you send updated forms with your new paperwork!

I called and spoke to an agent at the call center and even she was confused. She couldn't understand why it was returned. She said requirement is met if I sent either my passport photocopies or citizen card photocopies. So, it could be a human error.

do you know how long the background check will take?

No one can say as each case is individual and depends on things like the number of countries the applicant has traveled to and lived in, how easy it is to obtain information from them, etc. No two cases are the same when it comes to the background check.

My application was also rejected due to an oversight on their part on the documents that I forwarded. It was really unfortunate that they would have to return all the documents and I have to re submit it again on updated dates. My spouse was living outside Canada. But all the information that you have given would help a lot.
