Why are you not eligible for the cop-op work term. Low marks? Fortunately I was eligible for mine, but arranged my own employment for the work term.
Because of my unscheduled break since I am not in sequence. How did you arrange for your employment? Using co-op work permit or otherwise? Can I arrange employment myself based on the work permit letter? Or else I was wondering if I can apply for a new open work permit based on a job offer during the time of unscheduled break.

I arranged my own employment by sending resumes out. This was my co-op work term so I did use the co-op work permit. You can't get an open work permit if it is not a co-op work term, as you do not qualify.Unfortunately because of this break you will not qualify for a PGWP either.

I have checked the information from a Canadian institution that PGWP can be granted if there is unscheduled break due to unforeseen circumstances which applies to my case. So, I do not have any doubt about it.

My current study visa is valid till next year. I was wondering if I can apply for work permit based on a job offer during the time of unscheduled break. There are students who willingly take breaks from studies but mine is not with willingness. This is a common scenario though and right response from students, who had experienced before, would be helpful.
You should be careful with that advice, immigration is not required to consider your unforeseen circumstances although if you have hard proof such as medical records in case of illness it might work out.

You cant get a work permit with just job offer you would need LMIA or exemption even if you pull this off somehow both processes will probably take longer than your semester break so no point, also study permits expire if you are not a student for a while so don't just look at the dates printed on study permit.

From what I gather this is normal in Canada, programs with Co-Op in Canada don't generally arrange a job for you, they either give you a list of employers with open positions for you to apply or you are on your own.

My college actually arranged some interviews for people, but the work term course instructor was terrible. Tried to get me to take things out of my resume to make me look more appealing to the companies that were hiring (like the word experienced etc!). Luckily I am older and wiser than most of the students there, so I applied outside their companies and got a work term and a full time permanent job using my own resume.

@russ6970 Did you get the job that was approved by the university because co-op work permit only allows to work for approved for co-op?

@bongoman I got reply from my university that I can be granted PGWP due to taking break for reason being the death of my family member for which I would need to provide evidence and details in support for this.
From what I have learnt so far, following could be my options:
1. Apply for visitor visa and no change in current study visa since it expires next year only after completion of studies
2. Apply for open work permit based on job offer during break time
3. Apply for amendment of my co-op work permit if employer name can be changed to 'unknown'
4. Apply for co-op work permit for job supported by employer, not university i.e. employer specific and job as well as location specific work permit
5. Amendment of my study visa but not sure what amendment would it be.
6. Apply as destitute student for financial reason to be able to apply for work permit during job

My intention is to use the break time to wok full-time in order to arrange my tuition fees, that's it.

What could be the right option for me in this case?

1. Apply for visitor visa and no change in current study visa since it expires next year only after completion of studies
If you do not study for 4 months your study permit will be cancelled, so not an option to keep this.
2. Apply for open work permit based on job offer during break time
You cannot apply for an open work permit, as you don't qualify
3. Apply for amendment of my co-op work permit if employer name can be changed to 'unknown'
This won't work as the co-op work permit is for a co-op work term, which you are not doing.
4. Apply for co-op work permit for job supported by employer, not university i.e. employer specific and job as well as location specific work permit
You cannot apply for another cop-op work permit, as you are not doing a co-op term
5. Amendment of my study visa but not sure what amendment would it be.
This permit will be cancelled due to inactivity
6. Apply as destitute student for financial reason to be able to apply for work permit during job
You would need to get an employer that has an LMIA to be able to get a work permit. As all of the above answers, you DO NOT qualify for an open work permit now.

Not an option unless you find an employer with LMIA and you have not enough time for this as you will be out of status.

Only thing you can really do is change status to visitor.

1. Pretty sure when you apply for visitor/tourist status you will lose your study permit, someone can correct me here. Anyway you cant work as a visitor.
2. You don't qualify for open work permit from what I can tell.
3.You are not doing a Co-op from what I understand so a Co-op work permit is not useful at the moment no matter what employer it has on it.
4. Same as 3.
5. ?
6. Don't know what the requirements here are. This is the only one that seems possible if you qualify.

As per the case here, your responses imply I have no option available which does not seem to be true either. After all, I am still an international student and my break is approved by the institution only and due to this, I am able to join back the program. I know students do take break from their studies and travel to and from their home country. But how do they do so, only a lawyer can suggest better then since I don't think I have got the right advice other than the feasible option of applying for visitor visa.

But still thanks a lot to all of you who replied back and discussed it. This was helpful at least in understanding it better. I would see what I can do.

I don't think you have many options, but if a lawyer says different, make sure they are legit and not after your money. Would be interested to hear what they say.

The problem is you want to work, if you wanted to travel that is different, obviously Canada doesn't want people to come as students only to drop out and start working that is why it is almost impossible to do.

Thanks again for your replies. I believe there are certainly options available and would see what I can do. Thanks again.

Hi,
I applied for co-op work permit on 18th of September and my internship starts on 3rd of December. Did anyone face such situation before?

I did apply for co-op work permit with my study permit since my LOA says that I need to complete internship, but unfortunately they did not issue me and I had to reapply after coming to Canada.

Can any one please help me with my situation,

Thanks
