Hi all,

I have a son who is a newborn. He was born in the US. When I am filling out the application, I need to put his ID there. He has SSN and Birth Certificate but those apparently are not suitable for the application since they don't have expiration date.
We got a Connectcitut State ID for him, which is the same as driver's license, but it can't be used for driving. It has my son's photo and expiration date in it.

Can I use it as a national ID for him?

I know that Americans don't have national IDs but I can't skip this field in the application because it doesn't allow me to submit the application unless I put his ID there.

For our US-born daughter, we provided her US passport details in the National Identity Document section.

Yes, this would have been the best option. I don't think we can get the passport in time though.

you can get an expedited US passport same day, as long as you can convince / submit enough proof of travel to the US Passport agencies that are present throughout the US.

In that case, just select 'No'. I don't think there would be a problem.
You can pay the additional fee and expedite the Passport processing. You will recieve it within 1-2 week if you currently reside in US.

It requires the proof of emergency. At least that's what I was told in an USPS office.

I would be happy to but if I select "No", it asks if I have any government issued IDs and then I also select "No", then I can't go further with the application. In other words I can't just leave this field empty.
If I select "No" to the passport but select "Yes" for other government issued ID and then put State ID there, it also shows that the section is incomplete.
The only time it works when I select "Yes" to the national ID and put my son's ID information.

There is an option around the proof of emergency, although be advised I am not advising / encouraging pressing needs might bwe OK.

all the Passport Agencies need is proof of travel, whether it be hotel booking, car rental reservation (as in drive to canada etc), and or a Flight Booking (travel agents are able to issue travel itinerary without paying and that actually puts a valid hold in the AMADEUS travel system with the airline and can be validated although it may or may not show confirmed).Travel agents have the ability to place 24 holds with the airline due to their login.

An individual doing this via expedia will not be able to do this, they can only purchase the ticket and i think within 24 hours you can gert a refund but that actually means paying for it.

hope that helps

There are different types of expedite services. The one which does not need any Reasoning takes less than 4-6 weeks according to this URL: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/apply-renew-passport/hurry.html
I used this service in past (July-2015) by paying an additional $60 and I received the passport in less than 2 weeks (around 8 business days). You can give it a try.

I didn't provide any reasoning during the application submission. Since they do not need to do any significant background check for a new-born passport, the processing is faster than standard posted time.

The one I refer to is i think the same thing, however if YOU personally visit the specific passport agency which covers your state like Chicago Passport agency covers Indiana, Wisconsin, Illionois, Iowa i guess - they will hand it to you SAME day.and the cost is $60 extra on top of the regular fees.

and this is NOT using a third party, you deal directly with US DOS (Department of State) - Passport Authority falls under their purview.

Good luck

Thanks! I am scheduled to get the passport next week.

Best idea would be the passport, but if it's not doable, a state issued ID should work.
