Hi,

I made the negligent mistake of applying for a study permit without doing nearly enough research on the requirements. As I now understand, there exist covert, unspecified requirements that are as vital to your chances of success as the ones that are explicitly demanded. The most important of those is the study plan (or letter of explanation), which is meant to convince the immigration officer that you will not overstay the study permit. So, as it happens, I included neither of those... I also understand that I will be prompted to include any additional documents that I might have forgotten. Does that mean that I will be fine, or is my application bound to be rejected?

Thanks.

You'll not be prompted to include the SoP (study plan). Now visa officer will make his decision based on the documents you have provided. I guess you have applied offline. Now, the only thing you can do is to link your application online and send your SoP through CSE (case specific enquiry). Maybe they'll include that or not but it is worth a try.

Hi,

I did in fact apply online but even then there was no indication that a SoP was required. Will I still not be prompted, regardless of whether I applied online?

there is a mandatory column "client information", what you uploaded in that?

There is not. There's an "Application Form(s)" column and a "Supporting documents" column, both of which I completed. There was however an "Optional Documents" column that I left empty, but nowhere did it say that it's mandatory. Do you think the application process depends on the country where the application was started? I applied from the United Arab Emirates.

ok, I checked for UAE, it was optional. However, for India it was mandatory.
Anyway, you'll not be prompted to submit an optional document. Only mandatory document if missing is required to be submitted.
The only option now is to submit SoP through CSE.

SOP is not mandatory but highly recommended, read the paper based instructions for your country the requirements are much better explained there.

The SOP is your chance to explain to the Visa Officer anything about your application, why your study choices make sense, your ties to home country etc, agree they wont prompt you for it since its not required but will evaluate your application without it.

Do you also agree (as darthv recommended) that I should try to submit it through a Case Specific Inquiry, or would that be counterproductive?

for India, the "client information" column is mandatory. Generally, we submit SoP with a bunch of documents in it. However, we can also not submit SoP and upload only documents in it. However, it'll be a foolish thing as you've already stated the usefulness of SoP.

This is what was written in confirmation message which you get after submission of online application:
Please do not send to IRCC any documentation related to this online application by mail, courier or fax. Any mail received, other than what is received in your account, will NOT be considered.
However, candidates who forgot attaching medical sent it later through CSE and it was included. For SoP, can't say but it'll not harm except maybe add more days in processing. But that is just my speculation. The important thing is whether they'll consider it or not.
