Our wedding is booked for july 28th but a marriage certificate takes months to get after being married. The registrar general can make it happen sooner for us but it may still be too long as we will be getting an answer on her request to extend visitor status in mid august. It could be 10 days or a month longer but it certainly wont be long enough to get a marriage cert and be able to apply for PR. Has anyone encountered this problem with timing before?

Is this process of applying for PR too complicated for a layperson like me? I've found lawyers to charge 10k for help with this service. Necessary or is it reasonable for me to figure this out on my own? thanks so much

No it's not too complicated and I do not understand the problem if she is extending her visitor status?

she has requested to extend her visitor status but the amount of time granted may not be long enough to allow for us to obtain a marriage certificate which we will need to apply for PR.

When we extended our visitor record they did it for 1 year. Either way it should be for at least 6 months which would be enough time.

Where are you getting married? If it's in Ontario, you can submit a request to have the marriage certificate processed urgently in cases like this where it might be needed in an immigration application before status runs out.

There are a few threads on here detailing how to go about this:

For other provinces there may be similar procedures.

As for whether or not you should hire a lawyer, I think most people on these forums will say that for a straightforward case a lawyer is a waste of money. You'll have to fill in the forms and gather much of the paperwork yourself, anyway. Be sure to follow the checklist and double and triple check everything. Don't over-think the questions and stick to the limits of the supporting documents requested by the checklist (i.e. number of photos and pages of contact).
