In my case, I used "2161 Mathematicians, statisticians and actuaries" since it is the closest to my Data Analytics role. Machine learning in job descriptions is still fairly new, but it does align with statistical methods. I was also able to write to the Labour information division email (NC-NOC-CNP-GD2@hrsdc-rhdcc.gc.ca) over a year ago and they confirmed that 2161 was the closest NOC code for my data analytics job description (of course with the disclaimer that is the person's responsibility to choose the best NOC code). I read in other recent posts this email address no longer works, but found someone saying you could send a request here: http://www1.canada.ca/en/contact/noc.html, in case you want to give it a try (I haven't use this option).

Did you receive your ITA? Can I have the sample reference letter of yours? I have been working in the field of Analytics for the past 6 years

Yes, I received my ITA on 12/17, applied 03/17 and just got PPR email today. I stayed with 2161 throughout the whole process. I initially had a PGWP, and once the time ended, I process an LMIA-Exempt work permit through my PNP nomination also with that same 2161.

I didn't choose 2171, since my job description does not support easily a software dev., database, or IT profile, and as I mentioned, I got a confirmation email suggesting that my 2161 was a good NOC for my duties.

This are some of my job duties:

-Manage research projects. Develop business cases, determine priorities in consultation with business leaders, create
project plans, and manage timelines, deliverables and costs.
-Conduct analyses to provide increased understanding and hypothesis testing, identifying and forecasting growth opportunities, determining trends, and addressing challenges using a variety of techniques such as predictive modelling, regression analysis, RFM, cluster analysis, segmentation, data visualizations, and mapping.
-Prepare large data sets for analysis.
-Source, evaluate, and manage external datasets.
-Synthesize information and share results through written reports, charts, graphs, maps, and presentations. Develop
predictive model custom scoring and work with programmers to integrate coding into CRM database.
-Provide guidance, training, and support to help staff interpret, understand and apply scoring and other data analysis
results.
-Build a suite of statistical and data visualization tools.

Hi uncommon,

Your job description is quite different from the one I had which explicitely lists statistical analysis, prediciton, forecasting, visualization and other keywords that current data science and data analytics job include and that are quite aligned with statistician job duties. Have you checked

4163 - Business development officers and marketing researchers and consultants

maybe that one is worth looking into? it has sample duties like
  • Prepare reports, research papers, educational texts or articles
  • Plan and develop E-commerce strategies
  • Provide consultation on planning and starting of new businesses.
  • Conduct social or economic surveys on local, regional or national areas to assess development potential and future trends
  • Plan development projects and co-ordinate activities with representatives of a wide variety of industrial and commercial enterprises, community and business associations and government agencies
  • Assess business opportunities and develop strategies to attract venture capital
  • Conduct surveys and analyze data on the buying habits and preferences of wholesale or retail consumers
  • Evaluate customer service and store environments
  • Conduct comparative research on marketing strategies for industrial and commercial products

What is your job title and summary? that sometimes help understand the main mandate of the position to see if its around customer service, business analysis or data support.

Hi clayera,

I am also working as a Data Scientist. Although my job duties are quite similar to yours, but being a B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) graduate, I am not sure whether my graduation aligns with the graduation requirements for 2161 NOC Code or not.

The website's "Employment Requirement" head for NOC=2161 explicitly mentions:
"Mathematicians and statisticians usually require a graduate degree in mathematics or statistics"

I did have Mathematics as a subject for a couple of semesters but I am not sure if that qualifies. Could you please confirm whether your Graduation or PG aligned with above graduation requirements? If yes, do you have any insights wrt my scenario?

Thanks in Advance

Your job title does not need to match the NOC. Please choose the code that has 60 percent similarities with the roles and responsibilities of your job.

You will have to make the most educated choice for yourself as no one else will know your roles and responsibilities better than you.

Hi,

I am also having similar job responsibilities. And also filed my EE with 2161 code as I felt it was closest. However when I tried registering with Job Bank, in Data Scientist Job it is showing 2172 . Should I continue with 2161 in job bank also ?

Please suggest.

Hi all,

My job title says ‘Data Analyst’ with the following listed duties:

- Acquire data from primary or secondary data
sources
- Import, cleanse, transform and validate data
for the purpose of making conclusion for
decision making purposes
- Identify, analyze and interpret trends or
patterns in complex datasets
- Develop various scripts using Audit
Command Language to facilitate data analysis
assignments
- Report results using data visualization
techniques
- Prepare presentation using charts, graphs and
dashboards
- Provide assistance during various internal and
external training programme

I thought of going with NOC 1254 as the duties for this NOC closely aligns with the above. But as you can see, there is a fair overlap with NOC 2161 - although with missing key terms like ‘statistical analysis’, ‘data mining’ or ‘forecasting’

I work at a Big 4 audit firm and have an IT degree with a Masters in Mathematical Finance.

If anyone has had a similar job profile, I would please like to know what you picked as your NOC. Is it safe to go with NOC 2161 instead? Please let me know.

Regards
