Hi I am interested in sponsoring my mother (47 years old) and brother who is (15 years old).

I will have been a PR in Canada for 3 years as of June 1st. Is it possible for me to sponsor them, what would be the process, would i require legal help?

Thank you to anyone who can help!

As a PR in Canada, you could sponsor your mother with your brother as her dependant......but you the sponsor first has to apply and be selected to sponsor your mother and should also meet the other financial eligibility criteria.

Hi thanks for the response. If i already filled out the interest to sponsor form and have not received a reply. Would i have to wait until 2019? Also I am alone in Canada, I have no relatives here would the help me? Or speed up the process

Did you check to see if you meet the income requirements for past 3 years?

If you have not been invited for 2018, then you will have to enter the lottery again in 2019. The fact you have no relatives here does not help you and will not speed up the process.

Would i be going off the income for 2 people or 3 people (including myself)

Assuming you are single/no kids, you need to meet income for family size of 3.

And you were supposed to confirm your family size and met income requirements, before you submitted the intent to sponsor form.

Instead of waiting for the lottery, would I be able to fill out the application forms for sponsorship and try that way? Or is the lottery the only way?

Winning a lottery spot is only way. If you submit an app without having won a lottery spot, it will just be returned back to you.

What about sponsorship for my little brother? Would i be able to sponsor just him? Would my mom have to give me legal guardianship over him?

Thank you for all the replies!

1/ No, you can't sponsor just him, as he is not an orphan.

A dependent child is no longer considered a dependent child once they reach their 22nd birthday or for example they get married or enter a common law relationship before 22. Not sure there are any limits however the definition of dependent is very narrow for example :

A spouse, common-law partner or dependent child of a permanent resident or principal applicant.

See the definition in the glossary

No you can't sponsor your brother directly.

The only way is to meet the 3 years income requirement, win a lottery spot, and sponsor your mom for PR while your brother is still under age 22 so can be added as a dependent.
