Interviews are mainly called for when IRCC suspects a Marriage of Convenience; there are a ton of different things that could lead a VO to suspect MOC, such as different language/culture/religion/education levels, marriage on the first visit, no time spent together in person, age differences etc. For obvious reasons, people from countries that are equally as developed as Canada, such as NZ, are not MOC risks.

Interviews can also be called for when there are other serious red flags such as criminality, misrepresentation etc.

That makes me feel better, I also though that him being from a similarly developed country would decrease the chance of an interview.

Neither of us have a criminal history, he didn't overstay when he was in Canada a few years back. We're an interracial couple and he's a year younger than me, but I'm assuming that isn't much cause for concern. -hopefully. We will have been together for four years in May and got married earlier this month, waiting for marriage certificate to be mailed to us so I can send that through the webform.

I started over thinking too much. Thank you!

So after 5 months of not hearing anything from the embassy we finally heard something, however it is an interview.

Does this mean the embassy does not believe our relationship is genuine?! Is a interview a bad thing? Most people from my husbands country (Lebanon) get interviewed.

I don't think so. They are just trying to help you. Be positive. All the best.

Being interracial and having a one year age difference are not red flags for you guys. Don't overthink.

After reading all this, I feel so nervous in case there's an interview for my husband. There is a 10 year age gap between us which worries me the most. And seems likes everyone from Mexico gets interviewed. Has anyone been in the same situation?

Its not true "everyone" from Mexico gets an interview, just that interviews happen more frequently over there as do other less developed countries.

A 10 yr gap is one possible reason for an interview but it's unlikely to be the only one. Did you guys have a short courtship before marriage? Did he overstay his visa here? No parents attending the wedding? He has other relatives living abroad? You guys have a large educational and background difference? etc

Actually I just found out your husband was illegally in the US for "quite some time ", dont know if that means years, but its possible they want an interview to be sure he's not marrying you for PR since its clear he does not wish to return to Mexico. Be careful since if he's refused at the interview he cannot appeal the decision

Well we were together for almost 3 years before we got married, mostly living together. About the actual wedding, it might be a concern because we had a very small wedding with just my immediate family, his family didn't attend because they were all in Mexico. Reason we had a tiny wedding was because we didn't have much money to spend. So they are true reasons but I'm afraid they won't see it as genuine :( and yes it was years spent illegally in the US.

On the interview its likely the overstay thing and wedding will be the things they will grill him about. He will need to show why despite him being illegal in US that he's not marrying for PR
