Hi,

Now, I'm holding a 3-years PGWP and I'm thinking about going to school again.
I don't want to loose my post-graduate work permit just for in case, although I will start to study.

I'm wondering if I could get study permit while I have a Post Graduate Work Permit.
Basically simple Q = Can I hold both Open work permit and Study Permit?

Someone said that a Immigration office said "You could",
Someone said that "You have to change your previous permit, you can get only 1 status".

Please share your precise opinion.
Thanks.

My opinion is that you can not have both but I don't know everything. Contact CIC and ask.

I believe that if you changed your status to study permit, you would be able to hold a student work permit, maybe without the 6 month delay since you are already in Canada for a while. That would allow you to work for up to 20 hours a week or full time when you have holidays.

I believe that if you stay on your PG work permit, you would be able to take courses shorter than 6 months without getting a study permit.

Hi Mr. Maker,

I am in a similar situation. I obtained a Study Permit about 6 months after getting my Post Grad Work Permit. I went back to school because a masters in engineering was much more appealing than the job at the time.

Now, I am wondering if my Post Grad Work Permit is still valid because there will still be 6 months left on the Post Grad Permit after I graduate with my masters.

I don't have the physical Post Grad Work Permit because I (mistakenly) gave the border guard at the airport both and he took away the Work Permit saying I don't need it anymore. However, I talked to an immigration lawyer and he was a bit surprised they took it away. Also, I called the CIC and the operator said that on his "system" it says the permit is still valid and he was also surprised the guard took it away. However, the CIC operator said that guards basically have authority to do whatever they like. So, maybe it is invalid but he couldn't say for sure.

Anyways, maybe you can lend insight onto whether you think it is possible to have both a valid Study Permit and Post Grad work permit.

Hello,

As this situation is applicable for me now, I was wondering if anyone has the answer for it by now. Since the original post is from 2010 I suppose MR.MAKER should know the answer. Please reply.

I talked to CIC representative and he told me that you can keep both PGWP and study permit at the same time. That means I can work full-time and at the same time I can study full-time. But this is getting confusing now after reading this thread.

Recent replies from CIC seem to be stating that getting another permit will not invalidate a prior permit so you may actually have a work permit and then get a study permit and do both or have a study permit and get a work permit and do both.

I had applied to UofM for MS Pharmacology & Therapeutics (Winter 2017 admission) and was fortunate enough to receive conditional offer, the conditions being:
1) successful completion of my current program with minimum grade of B in my last 2 years of study (which is not an issue as I have completed my academics and is currently doing my 1 year internship)
2) submission of final transcript and a copy of the final degree certificate
However, most universities in India issue provisional degree certificates on graduation and provide the degree certificate much later (approx 6 to 10 months after graduation). I would be graduating towards the end of August and would receive the provisional degree certificate in September.
Considering my graduation time from India, UofM FGS had provided me ample time till October to submit my final degree certificate, which I might receive only by June 2017
I would be grateful if someone could inform me on whether I could use provisional degree certificate instead of original degree certificate to secure unconditional/final acceptance from UofM.

I spoke with someone at CIC on this question and the response is that one is allowed to have both at the same time. However, you need to know if your workpermit is still in process, you can withdraw that application and make only an application for a study permit. If your work permit is already processed, there may be nothing that can be done. You will have to keep both permits. The only downside in that is that PGWP is once in a lifetime. But the bottomline is that you can keep both if you want or if you have to.
Thanks.

Hi All,

I am quite in a similar situation and am seeking your advice. I posses a BOWP and am planning to going back to school this fall. There is a need for my to apply for a study permit but I want to make sure that it will not invalidate my BOWP. My lawyer told me that I can not have to permits concurrently while two CIC call center agents told me that it was a regular situation and both permits will be valid until the expiry date. Further more, one friend of my is not PGWP and just got a new Study Permit approved and his PGWP seems to be valid. Did anybody applied for both permits and have them both valid concurrently?

Best Regards,
Bogdan

1. You can't hold both (other than Coop) once you get a work permit, your study permit is invalid.

Hi PMM,

1. The officer from my future PDF university is helping me to obtain a LMIA exempted work permit. She/he confirmed that I can hold two permits (the other one is my study permit) at the same time. Because I need a valid study permit to finish my PhD while a work permit to start my PDF (which is 4-month before my PhD dissertation)

2. I also called CIC and they are sure holding an open-work-permit (BOWP/PGWP) could be valid during and after you apply a study permit. There's not conflicts between them.

Do you have any link from CIC clearly state that a new permit with overwrite the old one?

Hi Mr Maker,

You can definitely hold both study permit and PGWP at the same time. I did the same thing. I wanted to go back to school and I applied for study permit of one year. The study permit did not invalidate my work permit. I finished my program last year and have been working since. then. I hope this answers your question.Good luck for your future endeavors.
