Hey Folks,

I recently became a Canadian PR (FSWP) and have COPR stapled in my passport. I'm waiting to get my initial PR card. I'm currently living in USA (but will make the move to Canada soon) and gave my friend's address for receiving PR card. My question is that can I renew my passport here in the USA. It is still valid for 10 months, but I figure I do it now as I wont be traveling internationally these 2 months. Can I still cross the Canada land border with old passport and COPR (will carry new passport for sure)

Yes, you can use the old passport as long as it is valid.
Some countries mark the old passport when they issue a new one.
If your country marks the old passport, then you will have to contact CIC with the details of the new passport.
Otherwise, you don't have to worry about anything.

After PR card is issued and in hand, do we still have to inform CIC about new passport?

No. Once you are a PR, you are not required to update IRCC if you change your passport. Your PR status is not tied to the previous passport and you do not need to have it when entering. Take your COPR out of it and store it in a safe place until you travel.
