Greetings,

I am planning to move to Toronto early next year. My fiancee is a medical graduate (MBBS) from Pakistan with a year of house job. Can anyone advice on the procedure for her to practice medicine in Toronto?

I have heard its quite difficult for IMG's to get licenses in Canada, but i hope its not impossible.

Since i am from Finance background i would appreciate if the reply is given in more layman.

Thanks in advance

Hi Freza,
I’m facing the same situation. My fiancee is an IMG and I’m planning to come to Canada next year. Could you tell me your experience? And what path you have taken?

Your fiancée can’t even attempt to find a residency spot until she is a PR. Success really depends on the specialty and a lot of luck. The majority of the leftover residency spots are in smaller communities not the large cities and there are 2 provinces (BC and SK) that train a small number of physicians as GPs through a supervised training program but they must commit to practicing in an underserviced community for 5 years minimum. Those tend to be smaller more rural settings. There are usually thousands of applicants for a few hundred spots and only certain specialties. Any IMG coming to Canada should move knowing they may not be able to practice medicine. There are examples of IMGs who have not been able to get licensed. Many move. I have attached a recent example of an IMG from Pakistan who has recently left for the UK after attempting to get a residency spot for 5 years.
