is it even possible to get through to an agent by phoning anymore? it seems in the past it was, but lately it always goes to the "we can't connect you to an agent" recording. It takes a long time just to get to that recording, so unless you have nothing better to do than sit on the phone all day pressing buttons and calling over and over and over and over, I don't see any hope in actually getting through to talk to anyone (and anyways, the recording of your status pretty much spells everything out anyways, "we are processing your background check" etc..... probably no reason to bother them by calling anyways if the staff is actually working on cases rather than wasting time talking on the phone telling us the exact same things we already can get on ecas, I bet if one actually were to get through they would just say "we are processing your background check")

I fear that the border jumpers that we are reading about that are crossing by the thousands are taking away resources that would have been helping finish the cases that have gone through proper channels and have been waiting over a year, it is like the system is in a standstill from the perspective of a lot of us

anyways, that is my vent for the day, another week going by with zero progress :(
It is indeed very difficult to get through to talk to an agent from the call center. They are not the same that works on applications, so they can't help much regarding your application. They can only confirm that nothing is missing from you and what is still in process. Some people went through calling another service (like the citizenship line) and then when the agent said you called the wrong service, people asked if the agent can transfer the call to the right service and they got transferred in the waiting line.
Regarding the refugee claimants that are crossing the border illegally, I don't think they slow things down for spousal sponsorship. The truth is that the processing time was significantly reduced despite the huge increase in refugee applying through normal channels. I think the arrival of those crossing illegally might have an effect for landing appointments in Montreal, because those crossing illegally needs to have a rapid hearing at the office in Montreal, the only landing office in the province of Quebec. But i don't think they affect the processing in Mississauga.
Still looking at the processing time of most applicants, they are really close to the 12 months they promised. I know it feels bitter/sweet to see people that applied way after you getting their DM and landing. It's like, I'm happy for them, but when will it finally be my turn. I understand that, we went through the same. But honestly, just hang on, your turn is coming! Stay positive, stay happy, enjoy everyday,... despite the long wait! that's the best advice I can give you.

I sincerely wish you get news very soon.

@rizaki I don't remember if I asked you before or not... have you tried to reach your MP? Some are good to make things move faster, some aren't. If only your security checks are holding you up, there is probably not much an MP can do, but if it's anything else, the MP can push for you.

I didn't go that route, I guess I figure why the MP should push me ahead of the queue, if they could

the onus should be on CIC to work on things in order and get everybody done

as far as the "12 months" promise, we are way over that already. I really don't think anything sped up, for us that was just false hope and we are still being processed slowly as per the old timeline

another week has gone by, still no landing details...hubby and I have decided that we will give it to the 26th of this month since the date of the DM letter was July 26th (even though DM was on ecas as June 14th) and then we will contact our MP.

In the meantime, been thinking about a few things, maybe some of you have answers...

On the application for PR, had to use my maiden last name as per my passport...when I get the PR card, will it have my maiden name or my married name? Didnt change to my married last name on passport because of having to send it via mail and didnt want to take a chance on losing it since it was my only form of ID.
When I go to get the SIN and MCP will I have to use my former name or will they allow me to change it with my marriage certificate?

Hopefully all of that made some sort of sense, its early and I havent finished my coffee yet, lol

I'm sure we'really in the same boat. I am an April 2016 applicant with no SA or AIP yet much less DM. I contacted my MP last month who actually was able to get info on my file in 5 mins right in front of me but they didn't say anything we didn't know much about already. I'm aware I'm aware us 2016 applicants are well within timeframe because of the 26 months timeframe but it sucks. Feels unfair but nothing I can do besides continuing to wait. In time!

PR Card will come with your maiden name on it. My wife is in the same position...

Once you have provincial ID, you can request a change (free) with your marriage certificate. Once you get the paperwork for the change at the province level, you can send it to CIC and request a name change. They will do the change for you then.

It has to be a province that triggers the change.

But you can't measure the success of the 12 months on your personal case, and the promise was that 80% of applications will be done in 12 months. There are always some applications that are longer to process for some reasons, but the vast majority of applications are done in about 12 months already.
However, if you want to really know what is holding you up, you can try to reach your MP. But as I said, they are not equally good or equally motivated to help their citizens. If yours is motivated to help you, that can make a difference. It's better to have the sponsor make the initial contact. For sure, you won't lose anything (except time) trying to have the MP help you; either it will make no difference or it will make it move faster.
Again, I sincerely wish you will get news soon. @dominicantiguan as well!

@profiler .. As you said the status was updated to Decision made in the next morning with no other information. Thanks for the information. But I didn't receive any other information after that so far. What will be the next step? When they will update me with what information? Please reply
Congrats! Next they will email you a landing invitation. You may see sponsor approval, approval in principal and decision letters (email) in the mean time. They seem to get sent out of order when the system is overloaded.

I love it when I am right -- in positive cases :)

Edit: I guess I should make sure it's clearly a positive decision. You're becoming a PR.

sorry for so many questions...looks like all I would need is my marriage certificate, but where will I apply for the name change? Will I have to change it at each level (ie: SIN and MCP?)
Drivers license is already in married name.

Yes, all that is unfortunately true but it's unfortunate to hear or see you're not in that 80% especially when majority of those before and after you in this forum has gotten through. Faith is highly necessary in these times

There is no need to be sorry. You're just new here ;).

No a province has to initiate the change. So, when you get your PR Card, submit the Name change request, and supply your marriage certificate, and your NFLD DL. That should be enough. I would wait until you have your card though -- to avoid confusion.

CIC and Service Canada are unconnected. The responsibility for CIC is refugees and immigration concerns. A name change is a provincial government concern. Remember: Canada is a federation of provinces and territories. So, the provinces manage little things like names. The federal government will take the change, based on the ID provided by the province. I believe in Quebec, they do not permit a partner to take a surname because of marriage -- I could be very wrong here, but I remember reading something of the sort. Just goes to show you exactly why CIC is not concerned.

Once you're landed, you can mention to Service Canada that you have a name change happening (show your NFLD DL). They should be able to automatically apply that to your CRA account (that's who issues the SIN).
