2023 Refugee Claims – Still Waiting? Gather Here

Not trolling, there are still 100s of cases not only from 2023 but from 2022 & 2021 as well that are pending for a decision.

For these cases it likely had to do with delays on security screening but these wait times will become more common although the gazette is pointing to a new decision where minister delegate’s can process asylum applications and have to do it within a year. Assume they will mostly screen for obvious refusals and identify who gets a hearing.
This is getting more common. There is a backlog of ~300k applicants and IRB can’t process 100k cases/year so processing time make sense. The fact that all files need a hearing these day is yet another reason processing times will increase. Processing times were often 3 years in 2026 and approvals without hearing were still possible in part of the year. Canada had very lax entry requirements for many years so many people were able to enter Canada who normally would have never received visas. The loophole that allowed many to claim asylum in Canada through places like Roxham road was only closed in 2023. Many will wait a long time to get a hearing but also benefited from it being fairly easy to get a visa under the Trudeau government or have been able to enter at non-official border points.
