Closed work permit (LMIA/GTS) and income from a pre-existing mobile app

Hi everyone,

I’ll be moving to Canada on an employer-specific work permit supported by an LMIA under the Global Talent Stream.

Before moving to Canada, I developed and launched a mobile app that already generates money from subscriptions.

I understand that my work permit only authorizes me to work for the employer listed on it. My question is what happens with income from a business/product that already existed before I moved to Canada.

Would I be allowed to keep receiving the existing App Store revenue if I don’t actively work on the app while in Canada?

I also have the option of making the app completely unavailable in Canada, so there would be no Canadian users or revenue.

Has anyone been in a similar situation with a pre-existing app, YouTube channel, SaaS, or other online business while on a closed work permit?

If it is just revenue from an international business so there should be no issue as long as it is declared. How and what country you get paid in could have an impact. Also if you ever have to make any changes to the app while in Canada that would be problematic because that would be considered work.

What is your work permit timeline under GTS if you kindly share it here did it follow GTS work permit timeline that is 2 weeks or standard work permit processing time in your home country or even more and also did you provide medical exam upfront or not? Thanks and waiting for your reply.

The 2 week timeline is rarely actually 2 weeks. It commonly take many months
