Hello.
I was an international student who had to apply for asylum due to the fact that my parents pulled funding for my schooling in my final semester due to the fact that they found out through a family friend that I was an atheist. This happened in 2018. I have completed the courses required to graduate and all that’s left is there unpaid debt that prevents me from getting my degree.
My refugee claim was declared abandoned because I did not receive the notice for a hearing as I was destitute at the time and moving between homes. I was issued a departure order and left Canada in 2019 after confirmation of my departure.
It’s been years and even after returning to my country Nigeria I was subjected to sedation and taken to a faith based rehabilitation center as well as assaulted on multiple occasions. After all this, my father who is now old broke his leg and I was designated his primary caretaker because my mother is old as well. This has been since 2023. I’ve also sought other avenues to get a degree like going to Benin republic which led to my schooling being halted because the Nigerian federal government declared many of the universities including the one I was attending to be not accredited to hand out certificates. I also applied for a student visa to the USA which was refused and the country is now banned from making any further applications.
My debt has an interest of 14 percent per annum in Canada and has accrued interest over the years. I am considering applying for a TRP and work permit, asking for humanitarian considerations to work so I can pay off my lingering debt and obtain my degree as jobs are not forthcoming in Nigeria with just a high school diploma.
Due to my stint as a caregiver my father has given me the deed to certain properties he owns and my sister is willing to sponsor my trip and make contributions to pay off my debt. The money from the rental properties is not enough to offset the balance of my debt but it is the only means of financial stability I’ve been able to acquire considering I don’t have a degree.
My question is do I have a compelling case for a TRP? as I’ve calculated with an online debt calculator that it would take 2 years at minimum to pay off my school debt if I’m working full time. I would also be able to live on the baseline LICO for Ontario so I wouldn’t be destitute while doing so.
My second question is how will I go about convincing the visa officer that my stay is temporary?
