Hi folks,

I recently landed in Canada as a new permanent resident and received my PR card last week. I then returned to my home country. I’m now applying for a visitor visa for my mother, who holds a valid U.S. tourist visa. The application gives me two options for her purpose of travel:

  1. Visiting as a general tourist; or
  2. Visiting a non-dependent child (me), who is a Canadian permanent resident.

Since I’m currently not in Canada, it feels a bit illogical to “invite” her to visit me there. Would it be more practical or straightforward to apply under the general tourism category, especially given that she already has a valid U.S. visa? Thanks!

Would strongly discourage applying now. There will be concerns that your mother is attempting to move to Canada with you. Move to Canada and after you get established have your mother visit you,
