Hi everyone,

I live in Alberta with my wife and child, but I work in Ontario on a rotational basis. I fly there every 6 weeks and have been working for the same Ontario employer for 2 years.

I’m planning to apply for PR through OINP by myself, with my wife marked as non-accompanying. Later I want to sponsor my wife and child after getting PR.

We have an Express Entry profile with 504 CRS points, but it’s not enough right now.

I can move to Ontario, rent a room from a colleague, switch my license, and get a health card, but my family will keep living in Alberta.

Is this acceptable for OINP? Do I need to move my family too, or is it fine if I apply alone and sponsor them later?

Thank you.

What stream were you nominated from if applying for PR? What is status of spouse and child in Canada?

I can apply under the Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker Stream.
My wife is on an Open Work Permit, and our child has a Visitor Record.

So this is a non EE stream and assume your OINP score and NOC have been selected. When were you nominated to apply for PR. Because PR processing is 2 years or more. Read the instructions but need to show intention to live in Ontario. Don't need to live the in provice. Wife may lose status depending on when her permit is up. They don't have to move.

If not nominated what is your NOC and OINP score? Region? Education?

Very good chance listing your spouse as non-accompanying is going to be an issue. Either could be considered misrepresentation or your score can be recalculated. To qualify for things like OHIP you need to meet residency requirement and make your permanent home in Ontario. You also may run into issues with things like insurance for you and your spouse (home and car) if you claim you live in Ontario but spend significant time in Alberta.

NOC 72603 Marine Engineer. My OINP score’s 60 job’s in St. Catharines.

My wife’s on an Open Work Permit still valid for 2.5 years and she can extend it again in March.

Unfortunately, one immigration consultant told me that I have to move my family too because officers might question why they’re not coming with me and say that I need strong reasons for that.
But another consultant said I can move alone and I don’t need to bring my family for this process.
So now I’m honestly confused and don’t really know which one is right.

Your spouse has to be listed as accompanying because she is in Canada. You say you are applying for PR so you have been nominated. This is through the foreign worker stream so you don't even have to be living in Canada when you were nominated. List her as accompanying.

If you haven't been nominated then look at draws to see if NOC and region are selected.

What type of OWP? If SOWP then things get more complicated if you are primarily not living together. Is it 6 weeks on & 6 weeks off? Given how IRCC is operating would not want to appear to be settled in another province while applying for any province specific program. What is your score with spouse accompanying?
