IRCC reassessing my eligibility requirements to apply for PR as a member of the spouse in Canada Class(Both Applicant and Sponsor)

Hi Friends,

I have applied to sponsor my spouse under the Application for Permanent Residence under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class. Today, I received an email from IRCC stating that they are currently reassessing my (Sponsor) eligibility requirements to apply for permanent residence as a member of the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class. I’m not sure why I received this letter. The same was received by my spouse (Principal Applicant) as well.

I assume it may be because my wife left for India a couple of days ago due to a family emergency. However, before she left, we had already submitted a webform to notify IRCC about her travel. Prior to that, we also called IRCC to confirm whether it was legally permissible to travel to India while the application was in progress. The agent confirmed that as long as my spouse had a valid visa, she could exit and re-enter Canada. My spouse already holds a SOWP valid until November 2026.

I’m confused about why I received this letter. Is anyone else in the same situation? If yes, could you please share your experience or feedback on what to expect from IRCC?

A lot of travel for 2 days. Is PA eligible to sponsor (meet RO)? Call IRCC and ask.

I spoke to IRCC Agent and the agent itself is not clear why that letter was sent. The agent asked me to wait until further notification.

There’s nothing about your spouse leaving the country — she left two days before the letter (IRCC isn’t that efficient lol). Sometimes IRCC does this to make sure the couple is still together. You might receive a document requesting for evidence that you and your spouse are still together. Nothing to worry about it.

Yes you are right.

Your statement isn’t clear is she still abroad and if so how long is she expected to be abroad? Did you apply inland or Outland? Technically she can travel outside of Canada but depending on how long yea it could be an issue if you filed for inland sponsorship. IRCC customer service can not provide legal advice.

There’s nothing about your spouse leaving the country — she left two days before the letter (IRCC isn’t that efficient lol). Sometimes IRCC does this to make sure the couple is still together. You might receive a document requesting for evidence that you and your spouse are still together. Nothing to worry about it.

Sounds like they may have notified IRCC before leaving Canada and if applied inland that may be why IRCC is following up.
