Hi everyone!
I know it's not September just yet, but I'm really excited to start the process of applying for my citizenship and wanted to open this thread early to connect with others planning to apply in September 2025.

I also have a question about calculating physical presence. I was an international student for one year and finished my studies in June. My study permit was valid until September 30, and I applied for my PGWP right after graduating. While waiting for approval (which I received in December), I was under implied status. I'm unsure whether I should count that period as a student or a worker when filling out the physical presence calculator.

If anyone has experience with this situation or advice, I’d really appreciate it! And of course, feel free to share your timelines, questions, or just say hi. Let’s support each other through this journey!

(Apologies for stealing the thread, but I am also planning to submit my citizenship application in the next few days (so a fellow September applicant), so I would really appreciate anyone's kind help and suggestions!)

Hi everyone,

As I complete my online Canadian citizenship application, I would greatly appreciate your guidance. I have a few questions about how to enter my status history in the form correctly:

  1. Study permit extensions – I had two study permit extensions after my initial study permit. The online application seems to only allow one extension. How should I properly record the second extension?
  2. Maintained (implied) status – I applied for my PGWP a month before my study permit expired (February 2022). It was approved a few months later, which means I was on maintained status between my study permit expiry (March 2022) and my PGWP approval (July 2022). How should I record this period in the application? Should I add a separate status entry, or explain it in the supporting documents section?
  3. Visitor status – I also held visitor records (visitor visa) with extensions during my stay in Canada (similar to my study permits & extensions). Do I need to include these in the application, or is it sufficient to only show my study permits and PGWP?
Thanks a lot!

Hi all, I need guidance. I became a PR in august 2023 and now eligible for citizenship, however my passport expired in May 2024. I did not renew because I am not traveling out of Canada. Do I renew it before I send my application?

Hi! I personally don’t know anyone who’s gone through that, but I asked ChatGPT and it seems you can apply with an expired foreign passport.
From my experience, there’s a section in the application where you need to submit the passports you held during the past five years. In the identification section, you can use your passport as ID, but I chose to use my driver’s licence and PR card instead.

OMG!! I still need to go and get the damn photos taken so probably doing the same on the weekend. Good luck to the both of you!! Keep us updated.
Hahaha, lucky I knew about the photo part (last year, I witnessed my coworker do it haha)

If you are in Toronto, I suggest going to any Pro Passport Photo. They are quite reasonably priced (although my photo was very, erm, ugly : )) but I guess IRCC won't care!)

I just went to Staples to get photos done. $25 a pop which I think is overpriced but rather have it done right the first time.
