My spouse previously held Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) starting in 2011. She voluntarily renounced her status because she was unable to meet the residency obligation. I am now planning to sponsor her for a new PR application next year.
Previously, she received Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) payments for which she may not have been eligible, resulting in a debt owed to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Will this debt affect her new sponsorship application? I would like to negotiate a settlement with the CRA to resolve this issue before we apply. Please advise on the best course of action

Yes this will definitely effect your sponsorship efforts. You will need to hire a tax consultant to negotiate with the CRA as you could potentially end up owning thousands of dollars if it has accumulated penalties from 2011 to now. This is very much a CPA and a lawyer territory. Do no submit an application before these hurdles are cleared.

Thank you for your reply. Regarding the debt, I received a reminder notice from the CRA back in 2016 stating the amount owing was approximately $2,500.
My primary concern is ensuring this does not affect my eligibility as a sponsor or my spouse's application. Paying the debt is not an issue.
Given that I have this notice from 2016, do I still need to hire a lawyer and a CPA to resolve this, or is there a more direct way to handle it? or

I would just contact CRA and resolve with them directly. I don't think a lawyer or CPA is needed.

It wont provided you pay it off entirely and get the all clear from the CRA.
