Hi,

I’m currently preparing a visa application for my mother so she can come to Quebec to assist me during my childbirth, which is expected in February 2026. I’m a permanent resident in Canada, with no family or spouse here, so her presence is essential to support me before, during, and after the delivery. She would only stay for about 4 months.

On the application form, I need to specify the reason for the visa request, and I’m hesitating between two options:
  1. “To visit my child who is a permanent resident of Canada”
  2. “To provide care to a loved one who requires medical support”
Some context:
  • This is not my mother’s first visa application. She previously held diplomatic status in Canada for 5 years, and later obtained a visitor visa to attend my graduation.
  • She is now retired in our home country and only wishes to come temporarily to help me with the birth of my first child.
  • I’m not applying for a super visa, because I lived abroad for several years, I've been back only for two month and therefore do not yet have a full Notice of Assessment (NOA) covering one year to meet the income requirement. Although I have enough money to cover her stay.
In your opinion, which option would be more convincing and appropriate in this case?
  • Should I keep it simple and select “to visit my child who is a permanent resident”?
  • Or would “to provide care to a loved one who requires medical support” be stronger, given that I could provide a doctor’s letter confirming my due date and the fact that I have no family support in Canada?
Thanks,

Thanks,
You answer 1. Medical support is when you show that you are incapacitated, hospitalized and/or end of life care.

Would be very carefully how you describe your mother’s visit. I would stick to emotional support as a single parent and to meet her grandchild would not use words like care, help, etc. which implies work.

You're right, It makes sense. Thanks for your advice!
