you can request to postpone a refugee hearing, but i believe IRB rarely grants it unless there’s a strong legit reason, and having another PR application in process, like PGP, is usually not considered enough. If you skip or delay your hearing without approval, your refugee claim could be declared abandoned, which may also affect your status in Canada. It’s safer to attend the hearing as scheduled and let the PGP process continue in parallel, because if your PGP is approved later, you can simply withdraw the refugee claim at that time.

i could be wrong so i strongly suggest you to go to immigration lawyer and follow their words.

This is a question for your lawyer but both options are not great because abandoning your asylum claim will put you out of status and removal ready while approval will make you a protected person no matter how you eventually become a PR so will also come with limitation of being a protected person. Asylum claims should only be done when no other options. Assume OP was likely on a supervisa and was part of EIO2020 so whoever suggested claiming asylum gave them very bad advice.

You had access to both a supervisa and your child was on EOI2020. Applying for asylum unless 100% guaranteed and willing to deal with the consequences of applying for asylum and potentially being a protected person is never a good option. If approved you will not be able to return to your home country until you become a Canadian citizen without putting your status in Canada at risk, will need to use an RTD, etc. Even if asylum claim is denied it could also create complications for your ability to remain in Canada while PGP is processed (or require you to spend money to appeal a refusal to try to remain in Canada) or your ability to travel to certain countries.

For any other parents: asylum should always be the last option when your life is truly at risk in the entirety of your home country, you have no options to visit or other PR pathways and are willing to deal with the longterm consequences of an asylum claim.
