Hello,

I am currently in Canada with a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) currently employed.

I want to take an distance learning program that is a self-study, online program but includes an in-person component that can be completed in 2 weeks.

All of the courses are self-paced and can be completed at your own pace, but you have a maximum of 30 weeks to complete them.

I was wondering if I would be able to take this program with a PGWP if I complete the program in less than 6 months?

It depends on who is offering this program.
Remember FN when enrolled in DLI would need a study permit. However, if you are taking courses from a platform like udemy, has nothing to do with your status.

Hey! I am also planning to take self paced course from TRU, did you took any course from TRU while on your work permit?

Yes it is self paced online program with lab component of two weeks which is in-person lab & workshop

Distance learning can be through e-learning, correspondence, or internet courses. Distance learning is a process by which technology is used in ways where the student does not have to physically be in the place where the teaching is taking place.

Since by definition distance learning does not require one to be in Canada, a study permit cannot be issued for this type of course. For example, if a foreign national authorized to work in Canada is prohibited from engaging in studies as per a condition of their work permit, they are allowed to engage in distance learning courses.

However, some distance learning courses include an in-Canada portion to the program (e.g., special tutorials or the writing of final exams). If the overall course of study is greater than six months, then the student requires a study permit for the in-Canada portion of the program, even if the in-Canada portion is less than six months. The duration of the study permit should be for the duration of the in-Canada portion only.

So let’s suppose the distance learning course has already been started and it has in person practical’s for which study permit is required . But the theory distance learning course has to get complete first. Can apply for study permit now ? Being on open work permit and mention that we need study permit to complete this course will they issue ?

If the whole program is less than 6 months you don't need a study permit.

If it's longer and there's an in person component, you do need a study permit.
