Applying for a TRV (Temporary Resident Visa stamped on passport for Re-entry) for Minors within Canada (with a Visitor Record)
My experience in 2025 – hope this helps answer your questions!
Limitation in the IRCC Online Portal:
Important: You cannot submit a TRV application for yourself and your family members together in one submission.
- When asked “Do you want to submit an application for a family member?” always answer “No.”
If you select “Yes,” the system processes a TRV application only for the principal applicant. Other family members are mistakenly placed on the path for a work or visitor record instead.
- This is a known issue with the IRCC portal, and no error message is shown—so you may not realize it until it’s too late.
- To avoid wasting time, submit a separate TRV application for each family member individually (go through the eligibility questionnaire each time).
Applying for a TRV for Minors with a Visitor Record (No Study Permit):
This part is crucial—especially if the minor only has a visitor record (not a study permit):
- According to the IRCC website and even IRCC agents, only those with a valid work or study permit can apply for a TRV from within Canada.
- However, there's a workaround: you can apply by mail—and it does get approved.
My Timeline:
- Applied by mail: May 6, 2025
- Passport request received: June 17, 2025
Just follow the instructions under the "Apply for a TRV by mail" section on the IRCC website. It works—even for minors with only a visitor record.
