My husband landed in February as a PR, but unfortunately his mom isnt well and he will have to go back for more than 6 months. Probably indefinitely, but not more than 5 years (the period of his PR card expiry)

Will this be a problem? Will it invalidate his PR?

More than 6 months is not an issue. BUT he needs to meet RO which means that he can't wait till 5 years and come back right before his PR card expires.

Read the above link for RO. (in general living in Canada 2 out of 5 years or not being outside 3 years or more after first landing)
