Hello
Kindly share your thoughts on this .
I became a convention refugee in June 2021.
I became Permanent resident in January 2024.
As per my understanding instead of having 2 years and 6 months , I only have 1 year , 3 months to count towards citizenship. So I need 1 year and 9 months to apply for citizenship.
can I apply for citizenship in October or November 2025 ?
Please help .

  1. As a Convention Refugee (June 2021 to January 2024): This period amounts to 2 years and 7 months. Keep in mind that this time counts as half towards citizenship, it equates to 1 year and 3.5 months.
  2. As a Permanent Resident (January 2024 onwards): Time spent as a permanent resident counts fully towards citizenship. By October or November 2025, you would have been a permanent resident for approximately 1 year and 9-10 months.
To qualify for citizenship, you need a total of 3 years (or 36 months) of residency within the last 5 years. Based on your timeline:
  • Time before Permanent Residency: 1 year and 3.5 months (as calculated from your refugee time)
  • Time after Permanent Residency: By November 2025, it will be 1 year and 10 months.
Adding these two periods together gives you a total of 3 years and 1.5 months (36 months + 1.5 months) towards your citizenship residency requirement.

Given this calculation, you would meet the 3-year residency requirement for citizenship by November 2025, assuming there are no other requirements or conditions you need to meet.

I don't think it is true.
My consultant told me that between became a convention refugee and became Permanent resident they calculate maximum 24 month.
you got 2 years and 7 month so 7 months going to be waste

They calculate maximum 24 months before PR which (24x0.5day)=1 Year so after PR you have to wait 2yrs more to qualify applying for citizenship

Thats not correct. You can only accumulate Maximum of 365days only as temporary resident including as protected person. In this case, period between June 2021-2024 is 1 year maximum. Second, you need to be a permanent resident for minimum of 2 years. In this case, poster is eligible for Canadian Citizen June 2026...provided there'll be no changes once Conservative are in the office

You can only count up to 365 days pre PR and only a half day credit for each day spent in Canada (up to the 365 days). A minimum of 2 years of the residency obligation needs to be post PR to qualify for citizenship. Use the online IRCC calculator if you are confused. However you have about two years to wait since you just became a PR last month.

This is wrong.

So in this case two years post pr will be January 2026 ?

IRCC made a big mistake in that case. Only 1 year of pre PR time can be claimed towards citizenship. This is a very well known rule. It applies to all applicants, not just protected people.

Yes, but that would be assuming you don't travel outside of Canada during those two years. If you travel, then you'll need to wait longer.
