Good day,

My dad has recently passed away, and my mom and my brother are still in my home country. I just wanted to know what my options are to bring them over here. My brother is only 15 years old and studies in grade 10. I want to bring them both over here (can be temporary at first). My mom has a good bank balance and I have a good source of income from my job, I recently became a PR as well through the PNP program. Just wanted to know what my options are here and how I can proceed with it. Thank you and have a wonderful day! :)

Sorry for your loss. They can come visit you but cannot work or study. If you just became PR, you are a few years from being eligible to sponsor them through parent sponsorship program. It is lottery based and you must meet LICO for at least 3 years to be eligible. It is oversubscribed and lottery with quotas so some people are never selected. So don’t plan on it for a number of years.

Your brother can look at studying in Canada for post secondary education. For secondary, he would need admission to a high school and show at least $25k per year in bank account to study. So for 3 years, $75k at a minimum.

Do you mean temporarily as visitors or permanently?

thank you for your kind reply. What about a supervisa for my mom? My mom doesn’t wish to work or study, she just wants to visit and stay with me and my family. And does it cost anything for my brother to study in a high school besides the bank balance?

Your mother can certainly apply for a super visa once you meet income requirements. IRCC generally requires a CRA NOA. Have you been working in Canada and do you meet the income requirements?

Your brother will need a study visa to attend high school in Canada and will need to pay international student fees. This is around $15,000 per year in tuition.

Thank you for your kind reply. Where can I see the income requirements for that?
15k/year is honestly a lot for high school. :( I guess he can wait until he finishes then move here for post secondary with my mom. I don’t know if there is any other options…

It sounds like you want them to move here permanently. If that's the case, then you would want to apply through the parent / grandparent sponsorship process to get them PR status. In order to do this, you must first wait until you meet the income requirements for the last 3 years to qualify as a sponsor. You must then wait for this immigration stream to open up so that you can submit an entry into the lottery. You would then wait and hope you are selected. If you are selected, you can then submit the application to sponsor them.

Otherwise the options are a super visa for your mother or a study permit for your brother (but you have to be willing to pay the international student fees, of course).

Secondary tuition is about $10-15k per year plus he needs to show at least $10k for living expenses. So he can focus on post secondary. Not sure how your mom is moving with him. She can apply for a super visa but that is not a permanent visa. Your brother is not eligible for a supervisa. Right now, only option maybe a TRV and they need to show ties to return (job letter with approved leave, school registration, investments, property investments), funds, travel history etc.

Thank you! I think I’m going to go with my brother coming here for post secondary. My mom can come here on a visitor’s visa then I can upgrade it to a supervisa hopefully. She does want to be in between both countries since she still has a lot of ties to my home country. I just have to wait a few years from now till then but we can still visit each other until then. Again, thanks for you reply and help!

Your brother and mother will need TRV approval. You don’t upgrade to a supervisa. She applies for it from her home country.

You still seem to be planning on your brother and mother moving to Canada permanently without actually being selected for PGP. Your brother would need to be under 22 to qualify be included on your mother PGP application. PGP gets renewed annually and there could be changes to the existing process. Their demand for spots is significantly higher than actual spots which is why some have been waiting 5-10+ years to get selected to send in their application. As the number of people coming to Canada increases I would anticipate that the demand for spots versus actual spots will get worse. For the past 3 years IRCC has attempted to prioritize some of the applicants that have tried for years to get selected but haven’t gotten selected yet. It would not be surprising to see an attempt to prioritize applicants who have qualified for PGP the longest in the future. Unfortunately no at parents and grandparents wishing to move to Canada permanently will be able to do so. Canada has a healthcare system that is already in crisis and many situations are projected to get much worse over the next decade or two. We also have an ageing population which is why our immigration programs prioritizes young applicants.

If your mother has a TRV and has been visiting Canada regularly and if you don’t have any other siblings in your home country it may be difficult for your brother to get a study permit because his ties to Canada may be stronger than to his home country. He will need show That studying in Canada will benefit his steer when returning to his home country. To visit on a supervisa you have to be able to qualify for supervisa insurance. If your mother ever had a health issue she may no longer be able to secure supervisa medical insurance or be able to pass a mefical (if a mefical is requested) She will also need to return home to apply for the supervisa. If your brother is still attending secondary school I assume that she will remain in her home country with him.

Nah. Not going through the pgp route. I’ll apply for her once I’m qualified and hope for the best. She never had any major health issues no, as far as i know, so hopefully she qualifies for a supervisa insurance. And I guess I should’ve phrased it a little better by saying my mom will be in between both countries and not permanently with us. So I guess a supervisa after my brother gets accepted for a study visa would be my best option. Thanks for the insight.
