What are the ways to get a work permit if I have a visitor Visa?

I'm planning to apply on a Visitor visa as a tourist. and then I will visit all the offices and workplace to apply on-site or walk-in interview. Currently I don't have any job offers.

  • Please advice will this method be legal?
  • What will be the cost?
  • How to get to the workplace and apply for the Job?

Sure you can do that. Most jobs are posted online so you apply online. Few people visit offices. Some businesses may not allow drop-ins and say apply online. You don’t need to be in Canada for that. Cost for what? You drive or take the bus to a workplace, see if there is a job posting on the door and walk-in and apply. For corporations, you apply online and don’t visit. You do know a job offer will not allow you to work, and apply for a work permit. Assume you have ECA, IELTS and lots of funds as it could take a very long time, if you secure something at all.

You have to get a TRV first showing funds, travel history, ties to home country etc.

- It depends on what kind of job you are looking for. If you are looking for a retail job (e.g. in a store or restaurant), then you can apply on-site by simply going to the retail location and giving them your resume. If you are looking for an office / professional jobs, there are no walk-ins and you will need to apply for jobs online through the company websites.
- Make sure the employers are aware that you have no work permit and that they will need to apply for an LMIA and get that LMIA approved in order for you to apply for a work permit. Most employers are unfortunately not willing to go through this process.
- Make sure the jobs you are applying for align to your previous education and work experience. If you get a job offer and approved LMIA for a job that is not related to your previous education and work experience, there are higher chances IRCC will refused the work permit.
- There is no cost for applying for jobs. You will need to pay a fee of $155 to apply for a work permit. Your employer will need to pay a $1,000 fee to apply for the LMIA.

If you are able to find an employer willing to go through the cost and time to apply for an LMIA you will then have to apply for an WP. The whole process will likely take around 6 months and you will be unable to work during that time and there is no guarantee of approval. Would see if you can obtain a TRV first. Getting a TRV can be quite difficult. You must show that you have strong ties to your home country (good job, property ownership, etc.) and have the funds to support your visit. You also will be assessed at the airport to see if you are a true visitor and if so how long you are able to remain in Canada.
