Hi,

This is regarding OHIP. My wife and I are moving to Canada on Jan 20th 2023 permanently. My wife plans to travel to India from Feb 1st week to May 1 st week. To be eligible for OHIP (for my wife), is it okay if one of the spouse is able to prove the physical presence of 153 days??

Your question is a bit confusing. Each individual has to meet the residency criteria on their own. So what one person does won't influence the other. This also means that you and your wife cannot benefit from each other's residency days.

Your wife should only apply for OHIP once she returns from India. if she did apply knowing she would not meet the residency requirements that is healthcare fraud. If she doesn’t use her OHIP and reapplies AIP on her return she shouldn’t have an issue but should only apply if she knows he can meet the residency requirement in the future. You will need to verify if the 3 month wait period returns next year. If she gets sick she should be paying for care personally or cancel her India trip.

Thanks. I will have UHIP due to my employment, so I will restrain from applying for her OHIP.

UHIP is only for international students.
Yes, and it is also for the University/ University affiliated Medical Center and Hospital employees. In the absence of OHIP, my employer provides UHIP through another insurance provider. But, I will confirm with my employer. Thanks, though.

UHIP is the name of the policy but it is provided by a large insurance provider. Do you work in a university affiliated hospital in a job that is affiliated with a college or university? For example a postgrad working in a lab affiliated with the university in a teaching hospital affiliated with a university may qualify for UHIP but a general worker in a hospital should not qualify for UHIP but qualify for OHIP. It’s unclear to me why you wouldn’t qualify for OHIP unless you are being paid by/through a university.

You are right. I confirmed with HR and they told me that I will not get UHIP as I am eligible for OHIP since I am a PR. So now, I have to ditch the India plan as my wife cannot travel for at least 90 days if we apply for OHIP.

Does your wife also have PR?

There is no waiting period any longer and you’re entitled to access to healthcare from Day 1 in Ontario.

At this moment the wait time has been waived temporarily but it will return at a certain point so one should look right before departure and not dependon the fact that there won’t be a 3 month wait. Pretty surprised it hasn’t returned since Ontario seems to deny Covid is an issue anymore.

Either way, health care in Ontario is in shambles, and it doesn’t matter if there is a 3 month period or not lol. Doug Ford didn’t do anything for healthcare workers and left them to rot.

It can still have a significant impact of you do have an emergency or need to use healthcare within the first 3 months. When the 3 month wait period is reinstated people should take out private healthcare for 3 months before they qualify for OHIP. In the case of pre-existing conditions including pregnancy that will often mean having to pay privately for 3 months if you need care because you will likely not qualify for travel medical insurance for pre-existing conditions.
