Hello everyone my name is Anne. I am seeking some advice, i am currently in the US after completing my 4 year degree. I studied political science and fear returning to my home country as i am opposed to the current political situation. I do not support the current party in power no do i feel i am aligned with the opposition. I also consider myself part of the LGBTQIA+ community which is illegal in my current. While i have not actively spoke. Out against the government, due to concerns that my family will be targeted, my visa will soon expire here in the US. And going home is not a option. While most people would wonder why i don't seek asylum in the US. With the current political climate over Roe v Wade and possibility of laws like Same-sex marriage and such being targeted next. I do not feel like this is the place for me.

I am looking for any advice that can be give to me about potentially seeking asylum through the US. I do have an anchor relative in Canada. However i still face uncertainties. Any advice given would be appreciated.
Thank you

This sub-forum on this site is specifically for refugee/asylum seekers:

In terms of what you wrote, reasonably clear, but I would restate your sentence "potentially seeking asylum through the US" to read "potentially seeking asylum in Canada after completion of my studies either beginning from the USA or by entering Canada."

And that is where my knowledge of the topic ends. Good luck.

Hi - since it's simply an opinion then I would say that Canada's Convention (CR) refugee decision-making has a more progressive view when it comes to gender-based and/or sexual identity related claims. I won't pretend to know about the USA system except to say that Canada's process considers issues that it promotes internationally through the UN, and gay and women's rights are marquee items. They made a big deal of expanding CR considerations to include gender-based issues some years back. I haven't seen that in the States.

It is my understanding that Canada's system may well be more sympathetic to (gay or otherwise) females from autocratic, paternalistic theocracies.

Good luck
