Will unemployment affect chances of receiving a study permit?

I've been unemployed for almost a year now, using that time to obtain a professional qualification degree and to get a desired score on the GMAT and IELTS exams.

I have more than enough funds as well as a letter of admission from a top 10 Canadian university, which is directly related to my undergrad degree, but on a higher level (Masters). I also have almost 300k CAD worth of fixed assets (ties) to my home country.

I'll be explaining my employment status to the best of my abilities in my cover letter, as well as attaching the title-deeds of the property I own as well as their valuation to supplement my application.

I am still worried however that my application for a study permit might get rejected due to the fact that I've been unemployed for so long.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or could share some insight to whether my current unemployment would affect my chances of receiving the permit?

Highlight with explanation in your SOP. Won't be a problem if other parameters are strong.

All the best

I hope you're right. I've been losing sleep because of it for the past couple of nights.

Thanks for the kind words!

Don't lose sleep. As previously said you just need to explain that you have dedicated your time to getting into grad school and studying for the GMAT. Most international students pursuing masters or PhDs have very high chances of getting study permits. What program have you been accepted to.

I've been accepted to 2 MBA programs, which I'm going to be highlighting in my SOP, but ended up going with SFU for its reputation.

Do you reckon I should attach score reports or screenshots of my GMAT, IELTS and CFA ( which I have not yet completed) to supplement my SOP or is just mentioning them enough?

I'm waiting on a couple of documents to be translated and notarized and to pay my deposit before applying for the permit. By the time I would have applied, it would be 1 year and 3 months since I quit my last job. Would you recommend attaching a statement from my previous employer confirming the years I worked there (since I already have it on hand)?

I also asked a question on a previous thread, but no one has answered it yet, so I'll just lay it out here:

After I received my offer of admission, I sold an apartment I had for a decent amount of money that exceeds the funds required as per the admissions letter.
My concern is that I only opened this bank account last month when I received the cheque from the buyer. The CIC website says they need a bank statement covering the period of at least 4 months, but since this account is brand new (a month old) I'm worried my visa might get rejected when I apply.
I'm going to supplement my proof of funds by attaching the sales contract (translated and notarized) to prove that the funds belong to me.

Since I have been unemployed for a year now, which I am embarrassed by, will I have to submit a bank statement from my previous bank account (which is empty, mind you) or will the new one be enough?

As long as you prove where the funds come from it should be fine. IRCC asks for numerous months of statements to make sure it isn't a temporary loan.

What was your previous degree in?

Which is why I'm attaching the bill of sale along with a copy of my previous title-deed to prove that the money in my account actually belongs to me and to no one else.
I graduated in 2015 with an undergrad in finance.

My only concern about your application that you already have a degree in finance and are going to take the CFA so an MBA is seen as repeating a lot of the material you have already covered. I would focus on why you need the MBA on top of BCom and CFA.

Good catch, they are indeed overlapping. I'll add a paragraph how an international degree would be beneficial in my home country and would put me at an advantage in comparison with the rest of the competition.

The MBA itself is general, it's not an MFin. It covers marketing, accounting, finance, HR...etc. and even soft-skills for those who want to further advance in their careers and climb the corporate ladder.

Should I exclude mentioning the CFA then and just focus on stating that I want to leverage the Canadian MBA back at my home country to secure a position or to open up new career prospects?

Up to you but I may avoid mentioning the CFA if you have not taken any classes or exams. It is important to explain how the MBA would lead to more career opportunities versus just your BCom. Im general the SOP should show how a degree will lead to career advancement and better opportunities.

Hi,

One year is not too long. Just explain in your sop what you've been doing (like some professional courses, any academic related activities). Not something to be scary, but don't completely neglect it though.
