It's much better to wait for it. It normally only takes a week or two, maybe even less. Depending on where you are.

It should take just barely two weeks. Canadian mail isn't that slow :) I'm right in Ontario and it took two days. So I would think to Edmonton it would take maybe a week at least :)

To answer your question, if you haven't lived in Canada for a number of years, and therefore haven't filed tax returns, you could explain this and attach tax returns in the country(ies) where you have lived and worked. That's what I am doing.

The main thing they want to know is whether you have been bankrupt or in receipt of government financial assistance.

Remember, CIC only wants the most recent information, so anything that goes back years will not be relevant to your application to sponsor.

I have provided a lengthy explanation along with my Chinese tax assessment for 2010 (can't get the 2011 one until the end of April...sending my application at the beginning of April - if CIC requires this, I can send it later...but I doubt they will ask me for it).

Hope this helps,
FS

Considering the sponsor lives in Edmonton, I think they filed taxes. But good information for those who check this out wondering the same and are in your same position :)

This is what I did, because, even though I was born in Canada, I have never lived there and thus haven't filed taxes there. I submitted a cover letter explaining the situation, along with a copy of my pay stubs for the past couple of months, etc. though I highly suspect that the latter was not necessary.
