There are 500,000 undocumented workers in Canada. Because of their lack of status, they are extremely precarious and vulnerable to some of the most exploitative working conditions.

In September 2022, lots of migrant workers across Canada protests to demand ‘status for all’.

Go through the world in 2022, several countries accept asylum seekers, including loose immigration policy in the USA.

In Belize, the government start an amnesty . The purpose of action if to address the issue of migrants who are residing in Belize illegally, or recommended asylum seekers. Those who qualify for the amnesty would be offered Permanent Residence status with a path to citizenship. Registered as asylum seekers with the Department of Refugees (must have been registered before 31 March 2020) is one Qualifying criteria for migrants who are residing in Belize .

Maybe Canada could announce an amnesty in the future.

There has been movement to find a pathway for some illegal immigrants. Likely those who work in areas where there is a skill shortage and have been in Canada for a long time. It is a very complex issue. Canada will need to regularize status for some living in Canada without status but also not create a draw for others to live without status in Canada expecting that they will also eventually be able to gain status.
