I've applied to extend my stay as a visitor and am currently in Canada under implied status. However, I am thinking about taking a week trip to the US.
Will that cancel out my application if I leave the country?

If my application would still be valid, what documents should I bring to convince borders to let me in and that I am current under the implied status?

*I am from a visa exempt country.

No it doesn't cancel your application. You need to bring with you proof that you have an extension in progress and other evidence that you are indeed a visitor (where are you staying, travel plans, proof of funds, etc. etc.)

"Implied status" ceases the moment that you cross the border out of Canada. Therefore, you will not be under implied status when you try to get back in. See http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/visa/validity/implied.asp

1. No longer the case as per the Federal Court Ruling in De Brito
