Hi all,

quick question for everyone, would a base salary of $80-90,000 be enough to live on for a family of four (only one salary earner).

Please don't include rent or mortgage in your view

thanks

I don't how you live, but for most people here in Vancouver that would be a good income.
thanks for that, we live a fairly standard life. just wanted to check it would be ok for utility bills, car insurance, couple of meals out (not pricey) and maybe some room for savings

I would say it would be tight. I would drop the meals out unless they are at mcdonalds or something like that.

80-90 is quite little for 4 people under the same roof, what makes it possible for your case is not paying rent/mortgage, if not it would be out of the question.

thanks for that, we do have other money we can call upon and this is just the base portion of my salary, in addition i get commission each month. my company would also pay for me and my family medical.

most of the people i spoke said that if you take mortgage/rent out of the equation then 80-90k is quite a comfortable salary

Does anyone eat in McDonalds?

If people didn't eat at McDonald's, there wouldn't be any ;)

In my opinion, if rent or mortgage doesn't have to be considered, 80-90k salary is very comfortable, since the main expense in the Vancouver area is the housing. However it always depends on the living standard of course.

thanks for that, this is the answer I've had from most of the people I've spoken to and from my own experience in Vancouver it's not that expensive. Property, Yes, everything else No.

with regards McDonald's there just don't seem to be many around so assumed that most people would choose something else over McD's

Cheers for your answer

Actually quite a few..
Haha thanks, don't want to get too off topic. Perhaps I'm making the comparison to Hong Kong where there is a McD's on every street it seems.

In Van there seems to be a greater preference to head to other fast food outlets. Or maybe the choice is so much better/healthier, people head to other options

Especially when a former supplier of Hong Kong / China Mcdonald's fined for selling expired meat:

I think that was just for China not Hong Kong, the amount McD's is eaten here I'm sure I'd have seen some fall out. Where I live there are 2 McD's within a 5 minute walk of each other

It was about 10 mins drive to the nearest McD from where I used to live.

As a side note there are 378 in Metro Vancouver so you can appreciate why it appears there's one on every corner in HK
