TRV or ETA

This may seem like a stupid question but I can't really settle until I get some clarification. As a British Citizen visiting Canada for an extended period do I require a TRV or an ETA? One website informs me that an ETA is sufficient whereas another website states that British Citizens must apply for a TRV.

Hopefully up to 6 months, I'll be living with my wife who's Canadian. We've already applied for my permanent residency through spousal sponsorship and we're told last month that she's eligible to sponsor me. We're just sick of having a relationship where we only see each other every 3 months and every other time it's through Skype or text.

I believe you just need to apply for An Eta and you can stay in Canada upto 6 months. I'not sure what will be needed if you want to stay more than 6 months on Eta though.

just to clarify an ETA is an advance authorisation to travel Canada by air it is not a visa or permission to enter Canada so is not a visa in any form. Given ETA is mandatory from Sept 29 the OP must apply for one anyway to continue to travel to Canada.

As for staying in Canada as a visa exempt passport holder usually will be allowed to stay upto 6 months at a time as a visitor obviously with no work rights. Instructions for extensions here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend-stay.asp

As for sponsorship hopefully the OP has taken advice on inland versus outland application as there are major differences to be taken into account which is why most apply through outland process.
