I ended up going with an Australian company. It was a lot cheaper and covered a lot more. They have a 24 hour contact service and are easy to deal with. I only got 1 year. The immigration dude didn't even check if I had medical insurance, and gave me a 2 year visa. Better I have it than not though.

From my dealings with Australians many have told me the same thing, their coverage is better and less expensive. The one caveat is Australian insurers do not have direct billing relationships with Canadian healthcare providers. You would most likely have to pay for the medical expenses yourself and then file a claim with the Australian insurer to have your expenses reimbursed. This is the main reason why it is better to deal with a Canadian insurer.

Dear Australians, do whatever you feel convenient for you. You can buy Australian insurance plan or Canadian one. Just arrive to Canada with medical emergency plan of your choice. As for Canadian plans you can find most of them here

Good luck and welcome to Canada!
