Guys - Any pointers on cheapest way to move 25k CAD from my dormant Canadian Scotia Bank account to my USA BOFA account without incurring hefty fees. I am really a n00b in international money transfers. :p :p :p

I am ruling out Norberts Gambit as i do not have any discount brokerage account.

Any experience with XE and Transfer wise?

Thanks in advance

To avoid fees, why not carry cash across the border or carry multiple times with an amount you are comfortable to travel with?

I am in USA on WP and do not have visa to enter Canada. Looking for some cheap option to move CAD funds to USD.

I have been using XE for about 8 years and have been satisfied. Transfers are not instant, but usually less than a week. Better rates than elsewhere.

However, I usually transfer small amounts at least once a month. There is a surprising amount of paperwork involved in establishing the account (anti-money laundering practices). They have also just changed service partners and are still working out some kinks.

If you just plan to do a one-time transfer, might be better just to bite the bullet and do a wire transfer (about $40). But if you're looking for something you can use longer-term, I do recommend XE.

Thanks jes_ON for sharing information. I checked out XE and Transferwise and was getting cheaper quote from Transferwise. In the end decided to not move funds due to personal reasons.

Thanks. I hadn't heard of Transferwise, but have looked at other services before. XE is one of the few that works for me because of the small dollar amounts that are allowed. Example, Transferwise's minimum transfer is 2K, so that doesn't work for me. For larger amnts, I'm sure they're cheaper.
