So I (sponsor) just wanted to know if claiming my husband (applicant) on my taxes as my dependent will jeopardize our application.

You can't just claim him as a spouse? You get some tax credits for simply being married, and if you can show you're providing financial support to him.

I just wanted to make sure. He hasn't been approved for his PR yet. But I claimed him as my spouse just wasn't sure if that would affect our application. I make more than enough to support the both of us and they can see that on my T4

I don't see why that would affect it. If anything, I think it would affect negatively (if it did at all) if you didn't claim him as your spouse because after marriage, you should be changing your CRA marital status to married and filing your taxes under the impression that you are married. That was one of the "proofs" I personally sent to CIC, to show that I already changed my marital status to married for tax purposes.

By the way, congratulations on your promotion, don't rub it into your husband too much when you guys live together and you're the main breadwinner, because guys have huge egos :p

Correct, it won't affect it. CIC will not see anything at all to do with your taxes (CRA doesn't share information freely with ANYONE). Hence, the need for "us" to request an Option C for submission with our application to sponsor.

You are supposed to claim your spouse on your taxes. Since he doesn't have a SIN CRA may also ask to see his world income, and that will be used to determine your total family income and if you are entitled to any benefits.

If your husband is residing with you in Canada as visitor or something, then usually just claiming his as spousal dependent is fine. If he is not living in Canada and you are, then sometimes CRA may ask to see proof of financial dependence (i.e. money orders to him, deposits to his account, etc) to prove he is really "dependent" on you.

If he is still earning money in his home country, then if that is over around $10K-$11K per year, I don't think you will get any benefit from claiming him.

Thanks everyone! I just needed some clarification. I didn't think it would be a negative impact on our application.
