I am a Canadian citizen living in the United States. My daughter is U.S. born. From what I understand she can get a Certificate of Citizenship and so I do not need to sponsor her - why would any Canadian citizen ever need to sponsor a child? I am confused and concerned that I need to sponsor her for some reason.

are you canadian born or did you immigrate and obtain citizenship? if so, no need to sponsor, your child is entitled to citizenship...

if you were born outside of canada and obtained canadian citizenship by being born to a canadian parent, your child, born outside of canada, would not be entitled to canadian citizenship as of April last year (i think)...

Most likely she is a Canadian Citizen by birth, and does not need to be sponsored. You just need to apply for proof of citizenship:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp

If she was born since April last year, and you were born outside Canada, read this:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/citizenship/cit-rules-faq03.asp

A Canadian citizen would need to sponsor their biological child if the child was born before the parent became a citizen. A Canadian citizen might also be sponsoring their step-child (i.e. the existing child of a new spouse). Permanent residents also have to sponsor their children, if the child is born outside Canada.

OK, what part is confusing you? Most likely it's his form IMM0008 where it asks about accompanying and non-accompanying dependents. If you read the fine print, you'll see it qualifies this by saying: "You must include your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, and all of your dependent children, and those of your spouse or common-law partner, who are not already permanent residents or citizens of Canada.

He will need to list your daughter as his child on the Additional Family Information Form IMM5406, and you will need to include her in your forms (like Section 6 of IMM5481 and in Q#12 of IMM5540

You do not have to get immigration photos taken of her and she does not have to undergo medical examination. She is not an applicant for PR.

Hope that helps.

@Robsluv the part that is confusing is the one that asks about dependent children.. my understanding is that I do not include her because she is eligible for a citizenship as a child of mine... is that not the case?

Heather,
My wife and I were born in the USA . My parents were from Winnipeg and My wife's Dad was from Toronto. Like your daughter, we are considered first generation Canadians born abroad. We have a 13 year old daughter and want to relocate from Las Vegas to Toronto. Our daughter is 2nd generation born in the USA. As Canadian parents, we will have to sponsor as a permanent resident and then apply for her Canadian Citizenship.
since she is under 18, she will only be required to go to the swearing in ceremony. Citizenship ends with the first generation born abroad. This is why some Canadian parents have to sponsor their kids. Your Daughter is Canadian and does not need to be sponsored.

@lasbagman
Thanks, that is very helpful. The whole process can be confusing with all of the different requirements for everything.

Thanks
