hi...i m new to this forum...very nice and infirmative posts r here..i need to know that my son wud turn 7 this aug and he wud b going to Grade 2 here in dubai...but we wud be having our visas by the end of aug so we plan to land in canada..would my son be admitted to grade 1 or grade 2???and also which public schools are best in toronto or alberta?...

Grade 2. For best schools, google fraser institute and read the school rankings report for the cities and provinces...

Hello qorax, thanks you for your kindness towards everyone of us in this forum.

Please, can you assist in educating me on what full-day kindergarten is all about?. Although from the name, am thinking is for children between the ages of 4 - 5 years old and the schools that practice full-day kindergarten, organises some programmes before or after normal classes and parents are expected to pay some fees on this programmes offered. If am right, does that mean both parents that have children of these ages can take a full time job without putting the child in day care?. Please I need your input. Thank you

My husband works for an IT company in India, which is sending him to Calgary to work at the client location. We will be there for next few years.
I have a 4 year old kid and I am little worried about the school admission there.

This discussion is very informative. But, I have few queries. Appreciate your valuable info regarding this.

1) According to Qorax, education is free in public schools. but i found this in FAQ_for_waivers.pdf in CBE website(I am unable to insert urls here)

"Q: Why do we charge fees in a public education system?
A: We wish the CBE didn't have to charge fees, but there are two reasons why we do. Unfortunately, some programs or services cost more than the funding provided, so we have to close the gaps with fees. ..."

Also, 2013-14_school_fees.pdf in CBE website mentions fees for public schools.

The picture is not very clear to me. Probably, there is no fee for education, but I need to pay for transport, supplies etc. In that case, approximately how much would it cost for my kid for one year (everything included)?


2)Are the transport fee($215) and other fees (given in the above mentioned pdf) for a year, for a month, a trimester or semester?

3)My kid does not understand English. Would there be any help for her to pick up the language? How much would that extra help cost?

It would be of great help if anyone could clarify my queries.

Actually it depnds on ur income. If u stands in low income bracket then all feeS is waived otherwise its very nominal like 3g 30 to 50 $/year for tuition and if ur child stays in school for lunch supervision its another 50 to 100 $/ month. Fee is very little but if u r less than the minimum income level than its waived. So dont worry its almost freely

Thank you for the answer. I read somewhere that noon supervision costs around $295.
It would help if someone who has their kids studying in Calgary give correct figures.

Sir/s,

That is exactly why I have chosen to write this post -- it doesn't matter which grade or how many yrs. my kids study in my homeland/elsewhere -- in Canada they'd be taken-in as per their age on date of admission... and those "age date margins" I've mentioned against each grade in "brackets". See the examples below...

EXAMPLES:

On the date when I'm seeking admission into a school here...
a) If my child is 10yrs-08months -- he'd go to Grade-5 [a class for ages 10-11].
b) If s/he is 7yrs-03months -- goes to Grade-2 [a class for ages 7-8].
but my son will be of 18 years when he will do his o levels .we will come after that in which class he will be taken
c) If the child is 15yrs-11months -- s/he will join Grade-10 [a class for ages 15-16].

Hope u get the point.

Ps.: In many cases our kids will be "losing" 1yr. Mine did [both kids], but what the heck? Education system is much better here.

She need to have a study permit in order to go to school in Canada.

I am planning to land in May 2013.My son aged 16 yrs now will complete his 11th std in March 2013(India-CBSE)
When the schools open in Sept 2013 my son will be 17 yrs (Aug 2013 itself).

1) I believe he can join in 12th class then-Am I , correct?
2) What are the docs reqd for admission ?
3) Any vaccination requirements are there?

Hai every body, my son is in 10th class and will write his final exam in march 2014.but he is already 16 years in sep 18th 2013.In canada 16 years should be in 11th class..He will be 17 yrs by sep 2014 and supposed to be only in 11th class.If we land after his 17 th birhday will the school place him in 12 th class instead of 11th class.In that case he will miss one year of his education.If it is so we need to move before his birth day by the grace of GOD.We are confused.Kindly advise.Thanks
