Hi all,

Are we allowed to carry 10,000 cad cash from India when emigrating to Canada? As per my knowledge a couple will need to show a Pof of ~16000 cad at the Poe in Canada but a post in the rbi website says that a person traveling abroad can only take 2000usd in cash and the remaining 8k cad in form of cheque etc. So I'm confused please help!

POF does not mean you need cash or cheque with you. It means you must be able to demonstrate via letters/statements from bank that you have that much money in your account.

Hi Rose,

You can show the PoF, where Bank statement is suffice, but you need to open a bank account in Canada from India.

There are many bank which facilitate to open the Bank account from India. I am also exploring to open an bank account, will share the information, once I receive.

All the best!

You do not need a bank account in Canada for POF.

You can use POF documentation similar to the one used during PR processing.

You can carry CAD$1'000'000 with you but you have to declare anything above 10 grand in cash to customs..

From my own experience however some verifiable evidence of funds held is usually acceptable. If you want to be sure exactly what would be acceptable I suggest you speak to a licensed immigration consultant, or Canada border services directly. I have found Canada border services very helpful.

Here is pretty much all you need to know about carrying cash.

Good luck

Right on the Canadian Side (No limit, Just need to be declared)
Indians, however, limit it to 2000 cash and 8000 in other instruments (USD).

That means each person is allowed to carry only 2000 dollars when leaving India. Just to clarify my husband can carry 2000 and myself 2000?

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I'm now aware that there will not be any issues at the Canadian border as long as it's declared. My only concern is what will happen if a person crosses the Indian border with more than 2000 cad cash?
