Happiness is considered very important in life.

Why is it difficult to define?

What factors are most important in achieving happiness?

We all intend to lead a happy life although there is no concrete definition of happiness. It may depend on person’s mental, economical, physical, or emotional state and vary from person to person. One person’s joy may be other person’s reason of misery. This essay will, however, evaluate why it is difficult to come up with exact definition of happiness as well as some of the elements that may be considered source of joy to people around the world.

Happiness may not be an abstract idea but it does not have a solid definition. Although, it ranges from feeling of contentment to absolute joy even ecstasy, it vary from one person’s experience to another. The world comprises people from different backgrounds, cultures, and traditions where each one of them has unique set of goals, and achieving them can be matter of joy for them. For example, a person belonging to a rich family may feel ecstatic after achieving a record profit from a business, whereas the member of a same family may feel pleasure only after spending some amount of money on charity. Although the source of happiness was money, the one achieved joy after earning it, while the other by spending it.

Moreover, the state of mind can also define a person’s definition of joy. For example a healthy person may run a mile keeping himself fit yet feel mentally exhausted at the end of the day but at the same time an amputee feels blissful after getting a prosthetic hand or limb. Here the state of mind plays a role in making a person happy. This example also signifies that being content in its self is a blessing, the more you are satisfied with what you have the better you feel about your circumstances.

Furthermore, scientific studies have shown that happiness can be achieved. For instance, even if the conditions in one’s life may not appear favorable, they may exercise their mind to focus on positive hence enabling their mind to extract joy from apparently dim situations. The above example of an amputee and healthy runner relevantly reflects on this theory.

It can be easily concluded that happiness, however difficult to describe, can be achieved under all circumstances. The key is to be content with what you have and focus on the positive as an optimistic mind can derive joy from material as well as emotional sources.
