It's your permanent resident visa so there should be one entry only and then you'll apply for a permanent resident card. As per the rule you should be staying there but let's say you come out so the next entry will be based on your PRC and that time your visa will not be needed as you already hold a card.

This is my personal thought...

Wait for experts' comments...

PR visa is for landing purposes only. Once you land, IO will cancel the visa and accept your COPR as application for PR card processing. PR cards will than become your visa to Canada for next five years.

So do not worry and be happy

Hi,

You have been inundated with enough information regarding your concerns. To enter Canada first time as a Resident, you need a single entry immigrant visa. Subsequently, you will be confirmed as a Permanent Resident with a Card to back it up via your COPR. Further exits and entry in Canada will be based on the Card until you are qualify enough to apply for your citizenship, albeit; with a proviso, continuous three years residence out of the last four years.

Once you enter Canada first as a Immigrant, next 03 months or 4-5 months( depends on CIC) you are not allowed to travel abroad. Once you get your PR card in hand, you can go anywhere in the world and can re-enter as many times as you want.

Hope you are clear now :)

Does that mean once I land in Canada with "IM1" visa I can't travel outside Canada unless I get a PR card?

No. You can leave Canada. However, getting back will require one of the following.

1) PR card.
2) Permanent Resident Travel Document
3) Crossing the land border from the USA without using a commercial carrier.
