Passport expiry of common-law partner

Hi,

I just received an ITA and my common-law partner's passport is expiring in May 2017. Cic mentions the following about soon-expiring-passports:
"If your passport will expire within six months from the day you apply, you should renew it. Then, update your passport information in your application. This will make sure it is valid when we process your application."

Applying for a new passport is actually quite risky because on the day that you send in your application, they will make your current passport invalid- and there is basically 10 days, sometimes longer, that you do not have a single passport in your record.

Thus, I don't know what to do about this right now? Anyone in similar shoes and have experience with cic?

Assume May 2016 is a typo and should be May 2017. Does your country not have an express passport application process ?

Yes I meant 2017! There is such a thing as a temporary passport but that sounds like would be more complicated than just applying for a passport after the application has been sent. I mean, do I really need to focus on the passport right now, when it is valid until May? Id like to sort out the other docs first and so I would like to know if that would be acceptable for cic to change the passport details after the application deadline.
